There are quite a few books on this around.

I've given you a link to one of the better ones I know.

Good luck.

The best book is the one with big whole page pic of your favorite painting that shows detail up close.
I personally feel that, if you want to be self-taught, the best way is to consciously copy something. That is to say, take notes and try to get into the artist's methods. You don't even have to know how to draw - at this point - because all you need to do is trace and copy the image down.
You'd be surprised at how much you can learn from this, even if you just do a little or just take a small section.
However, please know that this is no substitute for knowing how to draw, or for a full art education. But, if you just want to know how to handle the paint or understand how to achieve certain effects, this is the way to go. At least for a while.

BTW You might want to skip all the technical details that an instruction book may give you and just begin with a little turpentine and oil on primed paper or canvas board. Starting out, you don't need to be overwhelmed by too much info, and as you get on you'll add what you need. In fact, nothing much can stop you from acquiring new colors and stuf if you're on a roll, I guarantee you!

To paint like the old masters you need to draw from life and often, and it would be recommended to enroll at your nearest atelier under appropriate tutelage.

Otherwise, Juliette Aristides has a book out called:Classical Drawing Atelier. You may find this helpful.

I think that books are not useful in this case .
The best way is to study old masters` works & try to approach to the way that they have used . You may start with trying to copy their paintings .To find their works online you can simly search Yahoo! or Google .
