I am 10, and sea otters are my favorite animals. Have been since I was 5. I love them to death, but their small numbers are troubling me. Being no expert, do you think sea otters will become extinct in my lifetime if I live to be...say, 85?

That is too difficult to estimate because it depends on how people treat the environment, and on many natural processes.

Just try to be good to the environment, and try to get others to do the same.

Every animal faces extinction due to natural processes that we could not possibly understand. Over the billions of years this planet has existed countless species have disappeared due to natural processes. Nature will determine when sea otters will become extinct. Just enjoy them for now and don't worry so much about things you can't possibly understand or control

The otter population in California steadily increased by five percent until 1995, when the numbers started to decrease and are now considered stable. Biologists are not sure why, but they suspect pollution may be sickening the otters, fishing gear is drowning them, and habitat loss is starving them.

Unless those problems are solved, there's a good chance they could disappear. There's only 2500 left; there were 15,000 in the 19th century.

No they won't. There never was that many to start with. And sea mammals will move in order to survive.
