Boy, I totally sympathize. I am a corporate travel agent and spent hours holding with airlines yesterday. I know you asked this question several hours ago and I hope your problem is resolved, but just in case I thought I would answer.

If the airline cancels the flight you have two choices. You can take another flight on that airline or get a refund. In a case where the weather is awful, like on the East coast right now, you have to wait until there is availability on a flight. This can sometimes take a couple of days when there are massive cancellations.

In the good old days airlines would "protect" you on another airline. That is, they would put you on a different airline's plane and cover your fare. That doesn't happen anymore, unless they have code share agreements.

By the way, etickets work the same as paper tickets. It makes no difference in standing by for another flight.

Depends on whether you have an e-ticket or if you have an actual ticket. If you have an e-ticket you can pretty much only do as the last poster suggested or go to the ticket counter of the airlines at the airport. If you actually have a ticket (rare these days) you have a lot more options. You can take the ticket and get a seat on any other airlines (as long as you are in the U.S.) because of U.S. laws.

If they can reach you, just wait... what choice do you have?
