Minced garlic, chopped onions, mushrooms, green or red bell peppers, olives, zucchini, crushed red pepper flakes, diced chicken, ground beef, ground Italian sausage, basil, oregano, Italian seasoning, cilantro, a little lemon juice, diced carrots...there are tons of things you could add.

I'd ditch the tomato sauce and go with pesto!
t's so flavorful!
Add some slightly sauteed red and yellow peppers (sliced thin) and you have a delicious dish. I prefer rotini pasta with this meal but any pasta will do

Ps: do not "cook" the pesto in the pot. add it after the noodles are drained and don't put it back on the stove.

You could do lot of things to improve the flavor of pre made sauce.
1.Always use fresh herbs as, basil, chopped parsley, and oregano
2.I don't know if you like anchovies if you do make the Puttanesca sauce which is
Sauteed chopped garlic, anchovies, tomato sauce, calamata olives, capers

add the sauce, and herbs let simmer for 10 minutes
4.or make chicken cacciatore which is saute chicken strips, thin slices of onion, green pepper, red pepper, mushrooms, tomato sauce, and fresh herbs. Let simmer for 15 minutes.
5. My favorite is saute mushrooms, garlic, artichoke hearts, zucchini, eggplant and tomato sauce
