Yes it is called a "micro burst" of sleep. This is how many sleeping at the wheel accidents occur. Basically what happens is your brain decides it has had enough of being awake and it puts you in a quick sleep mode, which last long enough to send the message to the rest of the body that it is time to get some sleep. The best thing to do when this happens is to take a short nap about half an hour {if you must remain awake} This will reset the brain long enough to finish the task at hand and go to bed.

If you get plenty of sleep normally and you still fall asleep when you stop. Its called Narcolepsy. EDS is a major symptom (EDS (Excessiveness Daytime Sleepiness), not to be confused with the trendy ED (Erectile Dysfunction) the S is important :) ) check out the link on my source reference for more info.

That is contingent upon as to: If you are sleep deprived. Or that sleeping condition. That is considered serious. I can't recall the name. Yet it happens at different times. Doesn't matter what time. Day nor night. It just happens. I knew an older gentlemen once. That had that problem. Please get checked out. If this is a persistent issue.

Yes. Many years ago when I was working two jobs and not getting enough sleep. If you're over doing it, slow down. If you are getting adequate sleep, you need to see a doctor.
