people who puts dogs in the back of a pick up truck should be charged for animal cruety. There is so many dangers to the dog when someone does that. They can jump out(even a well trained dog will jump out if they see something or someone they want),all the wind causes ear infections and dirt build up in their ears and infected eyes and stuff blows into their eyes. Not to mention if the truck was in a accident.Im from Texas too.I see too many dogs being neglected like this and other ways.

Most people are idiots. The sooner this is accepted, the faster the few of us with intelligence can help them.

Putting a dog in the back of a pick-up truck, even if it is a larger dog, is a horrible idea. An accident will send the dog flying, even a minor one.

Some smart people will actually attach their dogs to the truck via a proper leash. This secures the dog. The dog can still move and it may even give the illusion that the dog is free, but it is not. A harness will go around its body. This will prevent the dog from hopping out of the truck, from being tossed around due to sudden braking, and will help keep the dog safe in the event of minor accidents. I strongly recommend those that have to travel with dogs in a pick-up to please look into this.

As for the puppy that jumped out of the truck, I would have taken him right then and there from the owners and brought him to a hospital. Just because "he lived" it doesn't mean he was fine. Also, I would have reported the owners to the local Animal Humane Society. This is negligence and animal endangerment. The owners could have been fined and even lost their dog. If nothing else, they might have been enlightened on the proper way to travel with animals (and ideally, even with a harness, the back of a pick-up truck is not the way to go). If you got this person's license plant number, it's still not too late to report him. For not only did he endanger the dog, but his reckless driving nearly caused an accident.

Sadly, too many people think dogs will "just know" something. That's like asking a baby to just buckle himself in. Hopefully that person learned his lesson.

Yes, report it as animal cruelty. Give the cops/animal control all the info y ou can. You and everyone else in your vehicle are witnesses to a crime, and you are the most valuable piece of evidence to get his owners fined or imprisoned (depending on the laws there). You all did the right thing by helping the dog. I would have certainly helped the dog as well, but then again I pull all sorts of animals out of traffic quite often!

EDIT: I just wanted to say...don't feel too bad about giving them back their dog. The founder of an organization called "Dogs Deserve Better" is currently being charged with various crimes, including theft, for rescuing a dying for from its abusive owners and refusing to give it back (you can check out their website). The case will be going to trial soon. Anyway, it is absolutely horrible when the people that are doing a GOOD thing are treated like criminals, while the real animal abusers get off free.

I see this sort of thing a lot in Montana and it drives me up the wall.

I consider it irresponsible on the owner's account and an act of cruelty regardless of how fast/slow the truck is driving.

It drives me off the wall to realize that people out there really are this stupid.

It's common sense that a newborn puppy can barely run around and jump, nevermind trying to hold balance on a moving truck.

Thank god the puppy was ok. Next time grab the license plate number and report this type of thing to the Humane Society.

I absolutely hate when people put their dogs in the back of a truck!!!!!
It's so dangerous and plain cruel!
I don't approve of dog being tied up in the back of a truck either, that's what carrier are for: their safety and the safety of the other people on the road.
Throughout the years I rescued two pups that were tied up in the back of a truck. They both got scared and tried to get off of it, only ending up hanging from it. Both had to have legs amputated because of it.
Another time I saw the car in front of me crashing into a pole trying to miss the dog that jumped out from a running truck.
It's horrible, and yes, the people that do this kind of stuff should be prosecuted to the max the law allows!

You are awesome! I would have never given the dog back to them, but I would have tracked them donwn to let them know or keep the dog with me and have the cops get ahold of them. I travel a lot and see it all the time with animlas in the back and pray daily they stay in there and so far they have. I 'm sorry you had to experience that and the dog had to as well, but hopefully you opened up some eyes. Thank God the dog is ok........

A few years back me and my ex were driving cross country and in front of us was a livestock trailer, the back door flew open and to our surprise pigs were jumping right out of the trailer onto the highway which was also busy with traffic.

It totally freaked us both out, unfortunate for the pigs many did not make it through their ordeal..

We were force to bring our truck off of the side of freeway to try avoid hitting the pigs, I was too freak out to get out and help, and my ex was on his CB Radio trying to get the other driver attention.

In away I can relate even though they were pigs and not a dog.

That is horrible. Definitely call the police AND the local animal welfare folks. If you think the dog was not being taken care of (in general) they may be able to use the pate number and go visit these folks and check out his living conditions.

Good luck

Thank you for caring!

And yes, I would have done the same thing. There's no way, I could have just drove by.

But, Im not sure if I would have given the puppy back to them. Next time the puppy might not have someone around to save him/her.
