I really don't understand this. I hear people say that if you practice singing the wrong way that you can "harm" or "damage" your voice? Are these people saying just by singing too much or by singing the wrong way that you can actually permanently damage your voice? Or do they just mean temporarily? I mean, I just don't see how someone could permanently damage their voice by singing the right or "wrong" way.

If you sing, they say your voice is your instrument. Actualliy, your body is that instrument and what it produces is voice/sound.
If you do not warm up before you sing, you begin with tight vocal chords.
If you are young and what you're singing is rap or heavy metal, etc., you're pushing your vocal chords more than they want to go.
If you scream instead of sing, you're attacking your vocal chords again. And if your jaw is not relaxed or you are not in the best posture position and pushing air from your chest and not your abdomen, you will strain your voice.
It may happen suddenly and rest may heal the damage, or it may take time and some singers, even professionals, end up with nodes on their vocal chords.
I guess LOL I am one of those "senior singers".

Just like athletes train for competitions, singers have to do the same thing. Without taking proper care of the voice either by not exercising the vocal cords, smoking, drinking excessively, ect. it will be damaged over time. One of the components of singing properly is breath control. If a singer doesn't properly support with his or her diaphragm, he or she can strain the voice(think of pulling/tearing a muscle or tendon) that can cause damage. It can be reversible, depending on how much damage and how long the person has been singing for.

Unfortunately, singing talent varies from person to person. Some just get it while others don't. If everybody got it, then there wouldn't be bad American Idol auditions. So is it a good thing that everybody doesn't get it? You decide!

That's because you don't know the difference between the right and the wrong way to sing. Singing the wrong way can permanently ruin your singing voice if you do it for a long time.

The larynx muscles can be strained as can any others. The bands can develope polyps or nodules that effect the sound, sometimes. Case in pt.: Miles Davis spoke in a raspy whisper the rest of his miserable life ever since he cursed out a musician at the top of his lungs.
This is why pros "warm-up" with excercises, just like any athlete.

There are always Two path in front of you in your life? Right Path and Wrong Path.

If you chose right path you will never ever hurt your self, If you chose wrong Path you will get hurt your self.

Better option is to ASK you Senior Singer's They will guide you better then me.
