You can't just ask "how many pounds can he lose to not be obese" because we can't even see him. It all depends on whether he has some muscle or none at all. I mean I weight more than some girls and I look slimmer because my weight is from muscle. 230 is overweight for 5'8 for a man, I would say the BMI calc. would tell you a normal weight, but I would say he should loose about thirty to fifty pounds but still Its hard for me to say because he might be well porportioned and not even need to lose that much. You know iif your dad is overweight and asking other people is only going to make it more apparent to you. Just do some walks with him. Or he could get a treadmill and keep it in his house and work out on it for a little while he watches tv. Thats what i do with my elliptical i just bought. Is he is overweight he will lose the bulk quickly with some semi intense cardio, like using treadmill

Go with the BMI calculator. He should consider dropping about 50 lbs. or so. Try taking him for a nice long walk each evening after dinner.

big build is code word for obese and used by people in denial. your BMI chart is correct. until your father admits that he is obese, he cannot change. you can't force him.
