My dogs nail fell off too & trust me you don't need to go to the vet just pull the piece that's dangling off & put either stypic powder (if you have it) or corn starch on it & it'll heal in no time. If you take your dog to the vet they'll just look at you like your an idiot & do what I just said anyway. Next time try to keep your dogs nails pretty short.

While I have since lost this dog (he sadly had to be put down last year...), he would at times break his nail running when he got a bit older. He was a larger dog and I was positive he'd chew off any bandage I made for him, but surprisingly, he left it on until it seemed he knew his toe was healed.

Dogs have the tips of their toes in their nails. This is why you have to be very careful trimming because you can cut that tip and cause considerable bleeding. Typically, walking, running and general play are enough to keep a dog's nails trim, but sometimes older dogs don't get enough exercise and more trimming is needed. If not, it can break.

It may look bad, but it's really not. The nail is just barely attached. I cleaned my dog's foot as best as I could, then wrapped it with a some paper towels and tape. After a few days, this came off, along with his nail and all was fine.

If your dog is very old, he might be scraping his toes along the pavement as he walks due to arthritis. My dog had this too and frequently had bleeding toes. But it doesn't sound like your dog has reached that point - he basically broke a nail. It will heal.

Good luck!

Peroxide is the worst thing you can put on it. If you can take the nail off do so. If the nail is too close to the "toe" have a vet remove it. It will be a lot less painful then the way it is now. After it is removed wash in good with warm soapy water, and put neosporin or triple antibiotic cream on it instead to help it heal and keep from infection. Next check the rest of your dogs nails - if they are just as long or too long (as that one got) then clip them yourself (if you know how to) or make an appointment with a groomer to have them done for you.

My dog once 'popped' the nail right off of its nerve! The nail was 'standing up' from the nail bed! I was worried, but a pro-dog-breeder I knew didn't think it sounded like a problem (it was NOT the dew-claw nail, which I've read is more likely to cause serious & possible bleeding if cut). I just left her foot alone, & the nail fell off within a few days. The nerve itself gradually dried & shrivelled up, & then a whole new nail+nerve grew in to take its place!
I didn't keep track of how long it took, but I think she was 'back to normal' within a month or so!

Another dog I knew got her dew-claw ripped almost off -- it was literally hanging by its nerve. That was a more dangerous situation! I'm not sure what would have happened if it hadn't been removed surgically ... Maybe that nerve would have also shrivelled, & a new nail+nerve would have replaced it, too.

Chances are your dog got the claw caught on something and pulled it loose. If the bleeding has stopped, I wouldn't mess with it. If you can easily remove the part that's hanging, you could do that with some clippers. Maybe take your dog in next week to have the vet look at it to make sure it will heal and grow back properly, but they do get their claws caught sometimes.

I would flush it with peroxide and then when it is dry, put some neosporin on it. I would then check it the next day and if it is not better, it wouldnt be a bad idea to have it looked at by your vet. ooozing stuff sounds like infection to me though, try to flush it with peroxide right away, like pour some in a container and put is paw in there. Good luck

This happened to by Boston terriers dew claw.It was broken way up inside. I took him to the vet and ALL they did was get a hold of it and one fast jerk pulled it off. He just yelped once and that was it. And they gave him some antibiotic and some wash for it everyday. I would just clip it or pull it off. If iI knew that was all they would have to do I would have did it myself and saved $60. Good luck
