the LPO is usually the lowest level supervisor or if you are a junior enlisted your work center supervisor. It is usually a 1st Class Petty Officer but it doesn't have to be. The LPO's primary duty is to ensure that orders/information coming down the chain are carried out properly, and conversely any status or problems go up the chain. Pretty much they handle all the day to day simple issues to free up the higher ups.

If you are asking about "Leading Petty Officer" :

The LPO is a division level enlisted leader. He or she is responsible for task assignments to junior enlisted personnel in the division. The LPO reports directly to the division Chief Petty Officer (CPO).

The LPO also is the first person in the chain of command to initiate yearly personel evaluations. These evaluations are a performance review of the people he is in charg of. His review will be forwarded to the CPO and on up the chain of command.

The LPO is the person in charge of training in the division as well. It is his responsibility to ensure that his personnel are not only trained in their rating but in general shipboard functions and emergency procedures.
