There are several ways to bake a potato.
In a regular oven, wash the potato, pre-heat the oven to 400 F/200 C, and pop it in for 45 minutes to an hour. It depends on the size.
In a microwave, wash the potato, score it with a knife or poke a hole in it so it doesn't explode, wrap with plastic wrap and microwave on high for about three minutes (smaller potatoes will take less time, larger ones more time).
To test a potato, put on a baking mitt, and give the potato a little squeeze. It should "give" easily. If it doesn't, bake/zap it some more.

Wash it really good, wrap it in foil and poke holes in it with a fork 2 or 3 times. Then bake in a 350 degree oven for 40 or so minutes (depending on how big the potato is).
Yummmmm, I love baked potatoes! But I like twice baked potatoes even better!

you take a potato and poke it with a fork, for about 5 or 6 times, if you don't your potato might explode. It mostly depends on how big your potato is. Put the potato in the microwave for about 5 minutes on high. Then you open the micro and poke the potato with a fork. If the fork goes in the potato easy then the potato is done. If the potato is very small I would go 2 minutes. If bigger poke with a fork after 5 minutes and then go 2 minutes and poke with a fork again. It still not done repeat until the potato is soft when poked.

For a medium to large size potato, butter it up, poke holes in it with a fork, and throw it in the oven, any rack, for 45 minutes to an hour, at 400 degrees. Squeeze it ocassionally, to see if it feels soft. And use a towel or potholder when you grab it, because they get HOT! Good luck!

Wash it good
Poke holes with fork prongs all over
Lay on a piece of foil large enough to completely wrap it up
Spray generousley with "Spray Pam" (butter flavored cooking spray)
Salt slightly
Wrap tightly
Cook on 375 for approx 1 hour
**Time to cook depends on several factors including...
Size of the potato
Temp of the potato
How well your oven heats

if you put the potato in a microwave put it in a baggie first and cook for 5mins. if you are putting it in oven wrap in foil and cook approx. 30mins. the baggie or the foil keeps the moisture from the potato locked in and the potato is moist and not dry.
