At altitudes above 4,000' it's usually snow in the winter. Lower elevations get some hail and snow, but mostly just good ole rain. We're quite behind annual averages, this year, since there's very little snowpack in the Sierra Nevada mountains.

California has many diverse climates. San Diego is sub-tropical and gets most of it's rain from Mexico. Los Angeles is desert and some years is very wet and some years (like this one) is very dry. San Francisco is Surounded on 3 sides by water and usually has very wet winters. The mountains get snow during the winter. The northern part of California has weather similar to Oregan (cold with snow).
