If I wanted to include a bible verse in a letter to a young man serving time in jail for possession of drugs, what would be comforting and/or inlightening? The man is additionally, homeless, broke, and alone and looking at a fairly long jail sentence. He cannot receive any wallet cards, letter enclosures, etc, and never gets to be out of doors. But, he does have access to a Bible.
Thanks.

the thing that got me over the hump of addiction and helped me see the light at the end of the tunnel was Romans 7:19-20

"For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do. (20) Now if I do that I would not , it is no more I that do it, but the sin that dwelleth in me."

and then the verse were Christ tells me to take up his yoke for his burden is lite(sorry don't have it memorized) really lifted me.

"The Serenity Bible, A Twelve Step Companion" Is a great book for any body that is looking for a Christ centered recovery from any addition from eating to drugs. (in the end addiction is addiction no matter how you dress it)

I agree with the rest who would direct him to psalms,
Psalm 51 is were this wretched sinner can relate

He is going to have time to become a Bible scholar. He needs help and the best help he can have is from God. Jesus can open his eyes to many things. One is the true concept of time. A mans earthly life is nothing compared to eternity. Just think if a person was locked up in Hell for ever like so many will be. Jesus says who ever will lose his life for my sake will gain life. Tell your Friend to fast and pray to the Lord. You never what might happen. God Bless!

There must be a way to give this young man hope for a release may it be 5 or25 years. He must have a reason to believe that there will be some good out of this situation. Man I hope he is strong...Here is the thought I would give him...
"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me"
Just to let him know he can get through this and become the man God wants him to be!!!

AS 1:2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. 4 Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. 6 But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. 7 That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does.

if it is a cleansing from addiction that is needed then he should say the rosary . it worked for me and i was hard core.you don't even need the rosary to say it. When the blesses virgin intercedes on someones behalf some very powerful things happen. It also has a great calming effect on a person. Mgb

I would suggest he read Psalms 91. It talks of the promises of God during times of testing.

Incidentally, I hope you know this young man personally. Inmates have a way of sometimes "suckering" good people in by giving them a sob story.

You may want to look at Teen Challenge's web site for some direction. They work with people like that all the time.
