Boston terrier is my favorite for small children..They are exceptionally tolerant, and always clownish. And, they are sturdy..When the child is 6- or seven, the Bostie is still fun, like a puppy.
However, you would want to either get one young, or that has been raised with kids. Check out this site> http://search.petfinder.com/search/search.cgi?action=1&pet.Animal=Dog&pet.Breed=boston+terrier&pet.Age=Baby&pet.Size=&pet.Sex=&location=AZ&preview=1&scope=0&x=13&y=12
to see if there are any Bostie babies ( in rescues) in your area..Just put in your own zip code.

I have a 13 inch beagle- small lap dog about 23 lbs. and He is EXCELLENT with kids, he has great energy levels to play but he also naps a lot which is nice on the parent! They can be mischevious but if you correct the behavior from the get go itll go away. They are incredibly smart too! They are very loving and easy to sociallize which is great for dog parks and other kids!
I would wait until your child is atleast 1 1/2 so that she gets to have fun with the puppy, Children that are too young wont be able to play with the puppy but between 1 1/2 and 2 they would be able to recognize what a puppy is and play.
Beagles also start out so cute and tiny (like all pups I guess) but they are just little fur balls! I love em!
Papillons are great too, I had three growing up that still live with my parents!! Very beautiful dogs!

you should wait to get a dog for your daughter because she hasn't had enough time to be fully aware that when she pulls pinches or hits things it hurts. Really the problem wouldn't be with the dog but with the child not realizing that you can't pull hit or even sit on a puppy (i know it sounds crazy but i have cousins like this that are as sweet as can be but don't realize) Getting a small dog would be a disaster also puppies like to chew and bite no matter what breed they are. When she is older (maybe like 2 or 3 at the least) i would suggest a Scottie of all dogs or a dachshund. Dachshunds are good because they will let you know vocally if they're about to get hurt haha kinda like a warning call and believe it or not Scotties are excellent with kids especailly if you socialize them. Most problems with small dogs comes from people not allowing them to be socialized with other people and animals, carrying them around or keeping them in the house since they're so small people assumed they shouldn't be walked. All dogs are dogs no matter what size and early socialization is key my 5 month old Scottie loves everyone and its because i take him out regularly especially to places like pets mart where there are people, dogs, cats and animals of all sizes. I hope this helps! (I'm really big into dogs etc haha I did alot of studying before deciding to get one and I've had a doxie and a chihuahua before believe me a doxie would do much better, they're bigger and they're spunky and funny not to mention cute!)

You might want to look for a dog that's just a little bit bigger. A lot of the tiny dogs like chihuahuas or pomeranians get hurt by children very easily. A lot of them weigh less than 5 lbs, so it's easy for even a toddler to break the dog's leg by accident.
I'd look for dogs that are just a little bit bigger, but still small. Maybe a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, or a Cocker Spaniel?

dont get poms, chihuahuas, maltese, bishons etc. reason all have tempers usually one person pets. dont get beagals or any coon dogs cause they bark all the time. welsh corgies are good. they are hyper though. dont get one if ur daughter is going to pull ears, tail, etc. that makes the dog mean thus dog bites child and u put dog asleep for ur mistake of adopting. only adopt when shes old enough to know not to do these things. buy a older trained dog. pups would be too much. a toddler and a puppy wayy to much lol. i would actually get one a little bigger like 30 to 40 lbs.

I have had a min pin and I now have a small pomeranium. They are both wonderful with kids. You need to get one as a puppy so that way they grow up with kids. If you get an adult it might be scarred of kids. For a seven month old I would get the min pin because they have shorter hair and if it sleeps with the baby it won't sufficate it on accident
Make sure you have it on your lap with the baby alot or it might just get attached to the adult and be overly protective of you.

We had a Carin Terrier when i was younger and that puppy let me bite its ears, lick its nose, and pull its tail. Mind you my parents always told me that it wasn't right what i was doing.
The best thing to do is to get the puppy when its young and let it be around your kids a lot. Let them play with it and let it get used to them pouncing on it and being normal kids. When you see that the puppy isn't acting the way you want it to around them IE growling or nipping. Make sure that you tell it that that's sassy and make sure it sees that you are telling the kids the proper way to be around it too. Most dogs are great with the kids they grow up with. This also shows them what to expect from all kids

Contrary to popular belief Chihuahuas are very good around kids as long as they're raised around them or if you prefer adopting or buying an older dog just take your kids with you to make sure they are good with children. It also helps to make sure your kid isn't a little brat who will pull dogs legs, ears, tails & possibly break the dogs legs.
P.S. Chihuahuas also don't bark excessively or nip like alot of people say they do.

PUGS are fantastic with children and also for new parents as they don't have to be excercised heaps and aren't attention grabbing like most small dogs.
