Most people say travellers checks are a pain to cash. I'm sure your hotel will cash them.
I would take just cash or take half and use an ATM card to get more money if needed. If you use a ATM card be aware you will get money in pesos. The exchange rate is about 11 pesos to a dollar.

Have fun in Puerto Vallarta.

Most major hotels and restaurants will accept American Dollars. Also, if you have an ATM from a major US bank, most ATMs in Puerto Vallarta will allow you to withdraw money, in Pesos, so you dont have to bring as much cash and just take it out there.
My suggestion, bring $300 in cash and take out $300 there when you need it (all at once, I would suggest). BEWARE, use an ATM in Mexico during the day, in a very well lit, busy and visible area, and be accompanied by friends. ATM's are a classic spot to get mugged.

Yes, but the cambrias charge high rates for the exchange. (esp the hotel ones !)
Take small American bills ( $10 , $20 ) and pay with those . The merchant will give you pesos as change.
For example , an item that is 150 pesos would be almost $14 so give him $15 & you'll get 11 pesos back.

The current rate is about 11 peso per dollar but rates fluctuate, so check it before you go .

We usually take about half tc and half cash. Your hotel should be able to convert your tc's to pesos, but beware that not all places accept them. Take small bills and plenty of $1 to tip with. Also, notify your bank and credit card co. so they can approve any transactions, had that problem once before. Go to Pipi's and have guacamole, excellent!

take your ATM card. or just use your visa, or debit. visa will give you the best exchange rate. carry some pesos for small purchases...but all the restaurants, bars, and hotels take visa. places will take US dollars, but you'll get a 10 to 1 exchange rate, and that sucks. remember to bring ID if you use a card.
