You need to be aware of the cost of feeding a Great Dane. My own ate 50 pounds per week...so, if feeding Purina, that would be $100 per month. If you fed a premium food, it would run $125 per month...at least while he is young..The food intake does decrease as he becomes old and not so active..The initial price of a puppy will depend on how many breeders there are in your area..where I used to live, they ran about $600, but here would be about $1,000. There are many listed with this rescue site> http://search.petfinder.com/search/search.cgi?action=1&pet.Animal=Dog&pet.Breed=great+dane&pet.Age=Young&pet.Size=&pet.Sex=&location=CA&preview=1&scope=0&x=13&y=9
So, if you put in your own zip code, you may find a lovely Dane in your own area.

Dane puppies are very expensive. They don't live long and eat A LOT of food. You would need a dog food and water stand because of their height. It will become stressful for the dogs joints when he has to hunch and bend for his food. They will need constant access to water (it will change depending on where you live.) When you get your puppy from a breeder, you need to talk to them about family diseases. My aunt was terribly unlucky with her first two dogs and sadly both passed away of a disease passed on from a parent. One for sure and probably both could have been prevented if the breeder would have told her what to look for or to get them treated at a cetain age. You'll need lots of STRONG toys. My aunt owns 2 danes now and when she gets fabric toys, she goes over the predone stiching to make it stronger. Watch them carefully when they have a toy with a squeaker because they could choke on it. You need to be in a place where you can afford a couple thousand in vet bills on top of the cost of the dog and the cost of food. Danes are known to have a lot of medical problems so you will want to be prepared. Also be careful with countering. Danes are so tall that they can get food off of tables and counters, hence the name countering. You would just need to keep anything dangerous to dogs towards the middle of the table/counter. Although danes are a difficult breed, they are so loving and so caring and they become a member of the family. Good luck with you new pup and Happy St Patties Day!!

A well bred dane whose parents are health tested and cleared of genetic disease like bloat and hip dysplaysia will cost roughly $2,000. you can buy a pup for less but if you have to treat a genetic medical condition you can be sure it will cost more than $2,000, so stating will the best you can find is worth it,

You will need a good quality bed, stainless steel bowls for food and water a good quality food, lots of stuffed and chew toys, a large kong is good to have, money for vaccines and deworming and neutering, a giant sized crate some money set aside for mergency vet trips, so all together need about $4000 to 5,000 total to properly prepare to get thru the first year

Great Danes are beautiful dogs! So gentle, and loving, and loyal. You will need a big back yard, or a park to take the dog for walks and runs. Dishes for water and food, leash, collar, and if possible, would you be willing to adopt an adult great dane? There are states (like Idaho) that have dog races (yuck) but they give up dogs for adoption thru stores like pet smart, etc. Be reay and willing to give the dog LOTS of love and attention. Also, be ready to take the dog (or pup) to the vet, get it checked over, shots, etc. Rabies, distemper, all those things. And, getting the dog fixed, early. Take care..

OK Great Danes are expensive to FEED, they also eat a lot so that contributes to the cost. Great Danes are also prone to many health problems the most common is bloatation which is often fatal if not detected at an early stage ( it is not easy to detect this). these dogs are brilliant however sadly their life expectancy is about 9 to 10 years.

It will cost from $600 - $2500 + depending on color and bloodlines from a responsible breeder and area of the country you live in.

As for cost to keep...Danes aren't as big an eater as many people believe as long as they are fed a good quality meat based food and not one of the low quality grain based supermarket brands (which you shouldn't feed to any dog anyway), cost of vaccinations & exams are the same as for any dog, spay/neuter is more expensive, flea meds and heartworm meds are more.

A well bred, well cared for, well fed (quality food) Dane is very capable of living a long, healthy life. The average life span for a wellbred Dane is 10 -12 years with many living to be 15 -16 years old. In otherowrds the lifespan is pretty similar to that of a Lab, Golden, etc.

Also please note that a well bred, well cared for Dane from a responsible breeder is no more prone health issues then any other breed/mix of dog.

Danes do NOT need big yards or lots of room to run, after the puppy stage they are pretty much couch potatoes. They are NOT high energy dogs. They enjoy walks with their owners and just spending time with people. They are very people oriented. They do need (as do ALL dogs) obedience training and proper socialization.

You will need a crate, bowls(one for water, one for food), safe tough chew toys, a collar & leash and any other normal dog/puppy items.

Remember to NEVER feed a Dane puppy a puppy food of any kind not even large breed (they are a giant breed not a large breed). They contain way too much protein and calcium and can cause serious growth problems. Look for a good quality adult food with a protein level of not more then 24%..some excellant choices are:

Canidae All Life Stages, Chicken Soup For the Dog Lover's Soul Adult or Adult Large Breed Formula, Wellness, Blue Buffalo, California Natural, Innova (NOT EVO), Solid Gold, Premium Edge, Percise just to name a few.

I feed my Danes the Canidae and I love it. My adult Dane gets 4 cups per day..2 in the am, 2 in the pm plus she gets 1/4 cup boiled chicken, beef etc mixed in and my puppy who is now 8 months old gets 2 cups am, 2 cups pm plus 1/2 can of Canidae am & pm.
I also give my Danes vit. c 1000mg daily.

I use to feed them Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul which i absolutely love, but my puppy couldn't handle the duck in the food.

I highly recommend that you get the book The Great Dane Model of Nobility by Jill Swedlow. It is a wonderful book full of good honest info written by a very knowledgable, very experienced Dane person. It has a wealth of good info..correct info..many Dane books out there have incorrect info especially when it comes to feeding.
Make sure who ever you get your puppy from is a responsible breeder who does health testing (OFA/PennHip, CERF/PRA, Thyroid, etc), researches pedigrees for health, longevity, temperament, breed standard and either shows or has the dogs evaluated to insure they meet breed standard and that the dogs are registered with a legit registry...AKC, UKC (United Kennel Club) or CKC (Canadian Kennel Club) and not one of the fly by night scam registries. A good breeder will stand behind their dogs and will be a valuable guide in care & raising of your puppy
