So...is there a motive for keeping in touch with him. Is it helpful to you and your present employment state? Is he someone that you should continue to network with? Did you leave the place of employment to better yourself? If all of the answers are yes...then by all means, continue the acquaintance. The content of the conversations should be light and easy, with references to your common "interest" concerning your field. He was your prior supervisor, possibly you view him as a mentor...if that is the case, treat it as such. Seek his knowledge, opinion or guidance as needed...if he is open to it. Maybe suggest to him that you might be in the area in the future, and inquire if he is available for a quick coffee. From his response, you'll learn if he is open for continued conversation, etc.

Let the boss know that you'd like to stay in touch and get an e-mail address. Later if there's a need, you can always get a phone number and maybe set up party/lunch dates to 'catch up'.

sounds like a bummer pastime, sorry about your situation, i'd say I quit by way of detrimental operating ecosystem. attempt now to not move negatives with jobs, convey out the positives in interviews, in spite of if it wasn't. in the journey that they ask about the detrimental operating ecosystem, in simple terms clarify briefly the placement, going into too a lot element about the undesirable situation can damage your possibilities of having employed.
