I have a w/m on my boat, and it won't run on a cold wash with a 600w inverter. I'd like to buy a new inverter, and need to know the right rating. No-one around here seems to have the faintest idea!!

Check the model # plate or what ever on the back. It (by law) will show the wattage rating for the unit. The only thing drawing current is the motor, so it's not like a cloths dryer that draws both motor current and heat element current. 600 watts is not much of an inverter though, unless all you want to use it for is some lights or maybe a small radio.
