You should probably start out at some of the free tournaments they have online. Or, if there is a poker room nearby, many of them have tournaments with buy-ins as little as $50. It's best to start cheap and get the feel for tournament play. Also, if you're luck enough to win some of these tournaments, you may be awarded and entry into a much more expensive, big time prize money tournament. Even some of the free tournaments online can lead to big money.

Assuming you are talking about online, I am going to suggest that you avoid the very big tournaments to begin with. If you are a good player these tournaments take between 3-6 hours or more to win. If you only play premium hands and play nice and tight you could invest an hour or two of your time and have nothing to show for it. This can get quite frustrating after a while.

What I recommend you look at is the sit and go. It is basically a small tournament. Whereas the big tournaments start at a specific time of the day or night, a sit and go starts when there are enough players signed up. The smallest sit and go is literally heads up, meaning as soon as you and one other player sign up, the tournament starts. But you probably want to play something a little bigger than that. The next size up is a six player, then a nine player. Other common sizes for a sit and go are 18, 27, 45, 90 and 180 players.

You can find buy ins for these mini tournaments for as little as a dollar, so you can start cheap and work your way up. Until you can beat a $15 sit and go fairly regularly you might want to stay away from the large tournaments.

You will also find that most poker sites have what are called 'turbo' sit and go tournaments. With these the blinds go up very quickly so the tournament will be over sooner. This may be a bad thing if you are practicing for the bigger tournaments.

I would suggest you play on Poker Stars, as they have around seven million registered players. It is not uncommon for 100,000 players to be online at any given time. Therefore you don't have to wait long for your game to fill up.

At any of the major sites you can practice with play money first if you like, just to get the feel for it.

First i would start out with some local tournaments just to get a fell for it, and when you are cashing in these tournaments you should move up to bigger buy-ins. I just started out playing 2-4 limit and moved up from there. The circuit events for the w.s.o.p are good events to enter, they have buy ins from 200-10,000 dollars. Also trying to satellite your way into a bigger is a good way to go. You can play a satellite for 1000 dollars and get a seat in a 10,000 buy in. But just be comfortable in your game first.
