It all depends on what you want to do. More job fields are becoming more 'Who you know is more important than what you know' types.
I'll throw up an example from a humble cashier job at a mall. In the time when I was searching for jobs in such places my strategy was to ask which stores really required personal references. Those that didn't I filled out the applications for right away and turned them in. Those that did waited for me to gather references, contact people, and all that. Of course the managers of stores know that references are nothing but people who will say good things, even if untrue. However they ask for them because if you have trouble coming up with friends it is believed you wouldn't deal well with customers. I also had more than a few tell me that they threw away any applications that left the references section blank.
I know this is about college and not working at a mall, but it serves as an example that you need friendly people to even get a cashier job in some places.
If you are going to start your own business you could skip higher education completely. Most other fields seem to require a degree of some sort and good work references (not just bosses, but people who worked with you).
College expands your mind and horizons. Going through it widens the window of opportunity you have to make good ties with people. After schooling few people make new great friends. It is possible but more rare.
It is a sad stare of affairs. A few decades ago a college graduate was considered intelligent. In current times it is viewed more as a requirement and for many people the only benefit is making new contacts to list as references or help find a job.

Collage? You mean we should 'go' to a conglomeration of images to form an art project?
Now if you are talking about COLLEGE .. then the answer is: It DEPENDS ..
IF you are interested, are willing to work hard for your Degree(s), and are willing to pay for your further education (and then apply it to further your career), by all means ... GO! ENJOY ... and yes, study hard and apply yourself so that you CAN make that time and effort worthwhile.
If all you want to do is party it up, waste the time of the instructor/other students, and just not want to be there .. then College is not for you.
By the way .. there are many who are middle age to early retirement who WISHED they never wasted that opportunity .. and now .. are BACK in College to EARN that degree that they regret they did not so many years ago!

No, I don't think so, there are a lot of people out there in the world making more money today than the college student. Depends on the type of work you want to do. My son-in-law didn't go to college he gets $45.oo per hour. And loves his job and doesn't have a loat to pay back. That is one problem kids have today they go to college and then when they graduate, get a job, they can hardly make a living and pay the loans back also. So I say no, it is not necessary.

Yes, especially if you want a higher paying job in the US. Education is becoming a main stream for hiring, so it seems.
I don't necessarily beleive that it was a must years ago, but now days it seems to be. I personally wish they would understand that learning on the job is also a really good way, but this is not the norm anymore. As unfortunate as it is having to pay for the higher education, which is what society is making people do, by requiring higher education, you really have no choice anymore.

without a college education, your earning potential is severely limited. look into tech programs offered at community colleges. these are shorter than degree programs, cost less, require only classes that are pertinent to the job, and provide awesome training.
