9pm is definitely my cut off time unless of course it is a family member or a very close friend.

At my place I have the '10 to 10 rule', no calls before 10am and no calls after 10pm. I don't like getting any nor do I make any unless it's an emergency (and then I mean the 911kind, not just the kind that I've forgotten to call someone at an earlier time). But other people have other rules, if both parties know from eachother they're likely to stay up late and like chatting on the phone, then it's okay to call until 11 or even after that.

I think it depends on the family (too large a family means you stop calling early), depends on their individual taste (some families don't mind being called at any time), depends on their career (how early they have to get up in the morning or if someone in the family does shift work or if there is a baby in the house that the ringing phone or the call would disturb).
Our family had a rule that you don't call after 10PM unless it's an emergency. When I was single and in my 20's and dating I wouldn't mind if someone I was seeing called 11PM on weekends but the call had to be finished by midnight at the latest.

If you're calling a home phone, usually, it's best and courteous to call before 9:00 pm because they might have children, or adults might consider it too late afterwards.
However, if you are calling to a cellphone, it's a different story - depending on how well you know the person, the time is different. If the person you are calling is your best friend or really good friend, any time would be appropriate, considering the gravity of the situation. However, if the person is an acquaintance, then perhaps limit the time to approximately 11 pm or before midnight.
Cheers.

I don't like calls on my house phone past 9 or 10 at night unless it's an emergency, and calls no earlier than 8:00 AM. My cell phone is a different story, People can call anytime cause I have the option of turning the phone off :P

It depends on where you are, and how well you know the person in question. On both the east and west coasts of the U.S., most people are still up around 11:00 p.m. (that's when prime-time TV ends and local news begins, among other things), while in the Central and Mountain time zones, things generally run an hour earlier. If you are calling a friend and you know his/her schedule, then certainly you should take that into consideration when you call. If you're calling someone you don't know well, then err on the side of caution, and don't call quite as late.

I wouldn't call after 8 during the week, unless I know the people very well, or unless it is known that they stay up later and they have given you the go ahead. A lot of people get up really early. I used to be one of them. I would go to bed no later than 8pm back then and I had to leave my phone on in case one of my kids were to call because they either were at work or were out with friends. (At the time they were late teens, early adult). But the point is, that if the phone rang after I went to bed, and it was NOT one of my sons, I would be very irritated.
As a rule, though, I would stick with 8 until further ok.

It all depends on how late the person stays up and who they are. During the week when people have work and school, it's might be a good idea to make your last call at 8 or 9. On the weekends, I'd say around midnight. Unless they say otherwise.

I think 9 pm is late enough. I had to get rid of the house phone and switch to a cell because my step children's friends were constantly calling at all hours of the night, and ringing the phone off the hook. I guess common courtesy is an 'old people' thing, because they could never understand why I yelled at them for calling at 2 am.

Usually the time that you know their settling down for the night and getting ready to go to bed... whatever that time may be.
I work an early shift sometimes, so phone calls from friends after 8pm are a no-go. That's why their's an answering machine.
Late night calls after midnite are usually bad news/ important calls however, so most people will answer them.

I believe the cutoff depends on the families situation if a family has young children that go to bed early I would say 7:30 pm is the cutoff, if it is a couple whose children are older 9 pm and if it is an elderly person then 6pm as they usually like to go to bed very early. If it is a young person that likes the nightlife then I would say 2 am.
