My step mom is a manager of a local pub in her area. Yes she does make more on her pay check due to all she does, but she also works the bar. She has a wonderful personality and knows what she is doing. She only works the bar 2 or 3 nights per week unless one of her tenders need off or don't show. She has brought home $400 just in tips for one night. Most nights I would say she averages about $200-$300, even on slow nights. And yes, She and my father have nice things.

I hope you are not seriously considering this as a career choice. If it's something you want to try part-time, go for it. But as a rule, the average bartender does not make as much as say the average stock broker, physician or attorney. Yes, they can make some nice tips, but the bartenders making over 200K a year in Vegas are the rarity, not the norm. I know a number of them based on my business, they all work in popular locations, and not a one of them can afford "expensive things." If that's what you want, then get a degree.

Yes, they have the potential to make a lot of money. It is kind of like sales, you need to be good at what you do and have a personality that appeals to people, you have to be very friendly and outgoing if you want to get big tips. You also need to land a job in a busy bar that pulls in a lot of people. But they can make a lot of money with hard work, developing clientele etc.

It depends how busy the bar is Also, what sort of people come into the bar. A high end, expensive place will net you more tips than a corner bar. Also, you have to have good bartendering skills,

It depends on where you bartend. If you bartend at a chain restaurant, your chances of making money might not be as great if you were to bartend at a privately owned restaurant. Personality also factors in as well. Bad attitude=bad tips
Location is also key. Obviously bartending in busy areas, like Vegas, are going to bring in the dough faster and more frequently versus other areas, like Alaska.

That is entirely dependent on the location of the bar, its customers, and the level of service provided by the bartender himself, or herself.
