I'm a poolee and I can't wait to go to boot get my stuff handed to me and become a man, a fighter and most importantly a MARINE.

I know I'm making the right decision.

If you appreciate your freedom thank a marine because they are giving their lives to defend you!

God bless you, my friend! I'm from a military family and I know that the rights and freedoms we have are earned and protected by our great Armed Forces. I'm from an Army family, but I hold all who dedicate themselves to the defense of this Great Nation in the highest regard. As you join the Marines, you become the newest link in a chain of military history; the United States Marine Corps is one of the finest fighting forces in the history of warfare -- as well as one of the most humanitarian organizations in the history of charity -- that the world has ever known. From an Army brat to a future Leatherneck, "Huuahh!"

First, if you are going to be one of us always remember it is Marine not marine. A Marine is a green, amphibious monster that strikes fear into the hearts of our enemies while marine is an adjective used to describe a noun that has some relation to water.

Why do people hate us? People don't hate us but many people resent us. Why? Well for one thing people accuse of us of being arrogant and I suppose they are right. We are arrogant but that is because we are elite. All of us. Sure the other branches have their elite units but they also have their REMFs. Every Marine is a rifleman. Every Marine is a warrior.

People think we are violent, that we are killers. Well, that is our job and we are really good at our job. Consider that a 70 year old retired Marine broke the neck of a 20 year old mugger armed with a pistol in Costa Rica back in February when the fool thought that a bunch of senior citizens on vacation would make for easy pickings. That kind of power and the willingness to use it tends to make people nervous. What people forget is that we don't just wander the streets whacking people at random. The Marines are a weapon, yes, but we are a targeted weapon. We hunt down and kill the people our legally-elected government tells us to. We protect the President, every US Embassy in the world, and (if you know the Hymn) the streets of heaven itself. If you are an enemy of this country and our government sends the Marines to get you then may God grant you the mercy that we will not, but if you are a US citizen or a foreign national who has been placed in our charge then every Marine in the building will die before you are even threatened and we are going to take ten of the enemy with us when we go. As the shirt says, The Marines: making martyrs since 1775.

People also get jealous and they have a lot to be jealous of. We are older then the country we serve. We are the first to fight and the last to give in. We are the Few, the Proud, etc. Our NCO's wear the swords of army officers and our officers carry the swords of princes. We have the best uniforms and are the most recognizable and respected branch of the most powerful military in the world. When women talk about loving a man in uniform, we are the ones they are talking about. We are not the biggest, that's the army. We aren't the richest, that's the air force. We don't have the biggest guns, that's the navy. We are the Marines and we are the just the best.

I'm a retired Navy Chief Petty Officer who worked very closely with the Marines on a day to day basis. There are no more distinctive, capable, honorable, dedicated, trustworthy and utterly courageous people on Earth than a United States Marine. I had the honor and priviledge to work hand in hand with the Marine Corps for over 22 years, and never did a day go by that I didn't thank God almighty that they were there and ready to do their duty. Two of my closest friends were just promoted to Master Gunnery Sergeant and are both serving their 4th consecutive tour of duty in Iraq. One of them told me jokingly in an email a few months ago not to worry, because Marines are not allowed to die without permission and they hadn't gotten permission back yet. Still, ...when I see a flag draped coffin coming home from Iraq, ...a little more of me dies along with them. God bless all our men and women presently in harm's way. Please accept the prayers and the thanks of a grateful nation.

Anyone who tells you they hate Marines, point them in my direction and I'll be glad to beat their opinion out of them!

Congratulations. I hope that you suceed in your military career. And, YES you made the right decision about joining the military.
Don't wory what other people say about being a Marine. They don't know what the brotherhood and the comraderie being in a military force. Best of all, you made the decision for you and because you are under oath to protect the constitution and the freedom of those who are in the country. There will always be others that will comment you for what you do, but when it comes down to...it is you that gives them the freedom to say it and protected their freedom with your life.

Good Luck.

Semper Fi Marine.

People are jealous.

The things that truly matter in life are EARNED.

That is what makes the military so special in American society, and why some people are so negative to those of us who serve honorably, with no regret. If you think only Marines get **** from civilians, you are wrong.

Because we stand for something, and ask for nothing in return, except an honest living to take care of our families.

Some people can't stand it, because deep down, they know they are cowards. Or that they screwed up their life to the point where they couldn't rise to the calling.

Bottom line, they can't or they won't, and they don't like you for it.

Some people hate the Marines because they fear what the will never understand. Good luck to you in boot camp just do what you are told when you are told to do it no matter how stupid it seems at the time. It will be miserable while you are going through it, but when you look back at everything that happened you will laugh. Just don't be one of those guys who starts to cry for his mommy when the drill instructors start yelling. If you make it then welcome to the club, good luck to you on the path of becoming one of the few and the proud.

Not everyone hates Marines (learn to capitalize that son!!)

I respect them, even though I'm a former squid ! I'm an aircrewman, and one of our instructors was SStg C. E Hermann... I dislike HIM because he tricked me into SAR School, but I still respect the sneaky bugger.

I also love Unce Sam's Misguided Children because of ALL the delightful inter-service jokes (most of which would get me a TOS violation)...

But my favorite: What do the different services call a "Helicopter" ?

Army - "Chopper"
Air Force - "Whirlybird"
Navy - "Helo"
Marines - They just point to the sky and go "ooooh ooooh ooooh !!"

Oh, I'm jealous of the UNIFORMS... I HATE cracker-jacks !! I thank the USMC for Greens which were adopted, and I WORE as US Naval Aviation Greens !! My favorite Navy Uniform, and VERY rare.

I have the utmost respect for the Marine Corps, or anyone in the armed forces. A soldier rates high up in my eyes, and gets my thanks and appreciation.

If you're going to be a Marine, then I wish you the very best. I respect you as a person, and especially as a man. True red-blooded Americans appreciate what our troops are doing.

I am a veteran, and proud of it. And if I were ever to meet you on the street, a steak and a cold beer are on me, young man.

God bless you.
