After the workout is definitely the best time to take whey protein compared to any other time during the day. This is because your body is at its most anabolic. Also, it's highly recommended you take some sort of high uptake carb along with it. This will help raise insulin levels, which allows for even faster absorption of the protein and other nutrients.
Taking protein before a workout is ok also, but this should be done an hour or more before the workout. Your body isn't going to utilize it as much as after a workout, but you want to give it time to digest before your workout if you can. You'd be better off having some carbs before your workout to supply your body with extra blood and muscle glycogens.

Take if after your workout your body needs to replace its lost nutrients. Then take your body weight times 1.5 to get your total amount of protein consumption for the day that will put on some muscle. so if your around 175 you would take in 262 grams of protien a day.

You want to absorb any protein AFTER a workout out, if you want to consume anything before it should be carbs for enrgy. Protein helps to rebuild and recover the muscle!

I take mine after, if I take it before I'm to full to workout. Plus I feel that taking it after a workout is like if you were re-fueling in a way.
Good luck !!!

For the best results, try half an hour before your workout and half an hour after.
