Typically, wedding cakes are made with fondant to achieve that "sleek" look that is so traditional of a wedding cake.
Fondant is tasteless. It is sugar and water heated to a specific point which gives it a dough-like quality. Fondant can be flavored with extracts- such as lemon, almond, cherry, etc. There is even chocolate fondant (in white, of course, also). However, whenever the fondant is applied to a wedding cake, it needs some sort of frosting underneath it to 1. provide a sticky surface to adhere to and 2. to provide a moisture barrier so that the fondant doesn't become soggy (this is a technical and chemical aspect, so don't worry too much about the logistics of it). Bakers tend to use either buttercream or marzapan. Buttercream, specifically, is a very well-known frosting, and it is very well-known due to its amazing taste! There is nothing better than the taste of buttercream frosting, and there is nothing prettier than the look of a sleek wedding cake. A wedding cake with buttercream frosting covered in fondant gives you the best of both worlds. You get the amazing taste of the buttercream frosting, with the amazing look of the fondant. Basically, you can have your cake and eat it too!

Thats tough. Fondant doesn't usually taste very good. I'm going with buttercream.
For a wedding in August, you have to worry about heat. If you're keeping the cake outside you can't do buttercream, it will melt and slide right off the cake. But if you keep it cool inside it should be fine.
Good luck!

August is hot and buttercream melts, so if you are having an outdoor wedding/reception I suggest going with fondant. If you prefer a rich sweet taste and are having it indoors where you have air conditioning, by all means have buttercream. Fondant does NOT have to taste "bad" if your baker knows what they are doing. Make sure you taste the fondant from your baker before you decide, because it may be good. Any baker who is allowing you to do taste tests (which should be MOST if not ALL) will also allow you to taste some fondant if you let them know that youre considering it.

Fondant looks and holds better, but the taste is not very good. Buttercream is yummy! Just keep in mind though that outdoor August wedding could melt a buttercream cake pretty quickly. As long as you are having an indoor wedding, I would go with buttercream..Mmmmmm... I want cake!

fondant is cute for decoration but u want people to enjoy the cake. they have yet to make a fondant that does not taste like cardbpard:) fondant though is done on most of the cakes on wedding sires because it can be molded into almost anything. go with the buttercream and trust your baker.

I've heard the same thing about Fondant, I would use buttercream. Most people like it and it is great tasting, It might melt though in the summer heat if your having the reception outside.

It depends really, it's easy to just say buttercream, but maybe you'll have embellishments on your cake that the buttercream won't be able to hold. For example, I am having real flowers on my cake, and if I were to have buttercream (which is a very soft icing) it wouldn't be able to hold it. I have the fondant icing on my cake, and am having it textured. Also, think about the heat, and having the thin soft icing melt, depending on where you're going to have your cake. I was the same as you, thinking buttercream is better, but alas, I got the fondant, it's what is going to work for my decor on the cake.
Good luck :)

Buttercream. It tastes better than fondant and is usually more expensive. Our cake had buttercream and did just fine. Our wedding was this past August.

Fondant looks very nice, but it doesn't taste good. Buttercream is the way to go, unless you are looking for a very formal looking wedding cake, then go with the fondant, but yuck!

fondant will hold better in the august weather but buttercream tastes better.
why not ask your 'cake maker' frost with buttercream for taste then cover it with fondant to make it look pretty and stand up to the heat.
or you could have it covered in white chocolate that tastes great and will hold up pretty well. it also has a very smooth finish! mmm
God Bless
