Some gases ("greenhouse gases") let sunlight in, which warms the Earth, and then block that heat from leaving. That's the "greenhouse effect", and it's a natural thing, mostly caused by water vapor.

Man is making excessive amounts of greenhouse gases, mostly by burning fossil fuels. That causes the delicate natural balance to go out of whack and the Earth warms. That's global warming.

It won't be a Hollywood style disaster. Gradually coastal areas will flood and agriculture will be damaged. But it will be very bad. Rich countries will cope, but it will take huge amounts of money. In poor countries many people will die of starvation, but not all of them.

Most scientists say, in 20-50 years. But we need to start right now to fix it, fixing it will take even longer than that.

Ways to reduce the damage.

Conserve energy. Doesn't mean not doing things, means do them more efficiently.

Develop alternative sources of energy; nuclear, solar, wind, biofuels, clean coal.

Develop methods to capture (sequester) carbon dioxide.

"Global Warming" is a term which is used to describe a phenomenon which a great many scientists are seeing happen to our fragile earth. It seems to be as a result of us pumping vast amounts of chemicals into the atmosphere which is not allowing the natural cycle of the climate to function properly.

The result is that we are experiencing what happens in a glasshouse - the heat we are generating is being trapped by the unnatural load of chemicals in the atmosphere. The effect is a lot more serious than simply having plants grow more - the weather patterns across the world seem to be quite out of kilter...

Have a look at the documentary "An Inconvenient Truth" for some more detailed info on the phenomenon.

As far as actions that YOU can take - because it's going to be up to US as individuals to reverse the trends we are seeing, here's a brief and incomplete list....

1. Eat organic / locally grown foods...stops the production of more harmful chemicals, cuts down on transport costs and it's better for you as well! Also, make sure that the eggs you buy aren't from a battery farm!

2.Try going vegetarian as well...cows and cow farming is a big environmental / ethical nasty. I read a report recently that suggests that cows farting accounts for 3 times the amount of emmissions that cars do!!!

3. Buy ethical and fair trade goods. This helps increase the poorer nations citizen's basic wealth which in turn helps them to afford to achieve these kinds of changes as well!

4. Try to break your addiction to your motor car. These beasts are one of the worst things for the environment that we've ever had the misfortune to deal with!!! Try using public transport or ride places you'd normally drive to.

5. Use low energy light bulbs in your home. Consider buying high efficiency appliances (fridges etc.). Use gas to cook toast and heat water - toasters and kettles are huge consumers of power!

6. When it gets cold, put another jumper / sweater and thermal leggings on instead of switching on your heater.

7. Turn your television off at the wall at night, rather than leaving it on standby. This simple procedure can stop about 40kg. of CO2 getting into the atmosphere every year.

8. Consider buying "green" power from your energy supplier. It's not really "green" per se, but the premium you pay is used to subsidise people who are building sustainable homes and installing solar or wind generation equipment. The power so created is fed back into the main grid.

9. Go see your local politicians and question them about what they're doing in parliament to affect change. Tell them that you're worried and that their answers will shape how you vote in the next election. It's a long shot, but if you live in a country with a parliamentary system, it can be a grand way to get change happening. Look at the Green Party and the amount of effect they've had across the globe since their inception in the mid-eighties. It might not appear much, but at least we do have a choice these days! "Never underestimate the power of the individual".

10. Finally, do an "Ecological Footprint" Test...it will show you how much you consume, based on your own lifestyle and residence...it's pretty scary, but very worthwhile.

Please see the people who post replies that "Global Warming is a myth" as ostriches with their heads in the sand. we ALL need to wake up to what is going on and accept the evidence.

Hope this helps!

Love and Light,

Jarrah

Our earth is surrounded by an envelop of gases of which few have the property to absorb radiations emitted by the earth. This is the natural process which maintains our earth temperature. However from the last few decades, concentration of these gases has been increasing and resulting in more radiations to be absorbed and consequently higher temperatures at earth surface. This process is reffered to global Warming or sometimes as enhanced global warming. However the present studies carried out by IPCC shows that this warming process is not uniform all over the world. At some place climate is becoming more huimd, at some dry or at some palces colder. therfore now term is referred as Climate Change rather golbal warming.

We can cutshort our emissions to control this process at the present stage. Mainly studies going on in this sector aims at adaptation to this process and emission controls.

Global warming is a scheme to increase government control by taking advantage of a natural warming period. The gullible and guilt ridden have gladly jumped aboard the "humans are evil" band wagon. Humans have been emitting CO2 from factories for a couple hundred years. During that time the CO2 has risen may 1 part in 10,000 (100 parts per million). It is getting close to 400 ppm. The global warming alarmists think that all the earth's warming is tided to the concentration of CO2. There seems to be no consideration for water vapor, a much more important, and unpredictable greenhouse gas. Water vapor can be as much as 4 per cent or 400 times a concentrated as CO2. The problem is you can't tax a cloud so the inconvenient truth is, the ignore the inconvenients facts.

what is it? An probable explanation for the "unnatural" environmental events and signals from Earth currently alarming 95% of thinking Scientists.
Can it be controlled? Scientists are now starting to turn their attention towards Carbon dioxide sequestration. Mainly by capturing CO2 emissions from as many new Coal-fired power plants in China, India, and the USA in the near future as possible, and burying it in liquid form under the Pacific Ocean where crude oil used to be.
