is it common for elderly people to be skeptical of others?

if so how to deal with elderly people like that without getting hurt?

Elderly people are the salt of the earth. If they are skeptical of things it is based on their experiences. Being positive and sincere is the best approach. But generally speaking every person thinks in their own way and so I suppose it is a logical concept that you may be hurt regardless of yourself.
