Watch the documentary "An Inconvenient Truth" by Al Gore. It won an Oscar this year for Best Documentary.

It is a factual, scientifically based presentation on global warming. It will shake you in your shoes . . . and hopefully get your "feet" moving in the right direction.

Do not let politics or your like/dislike of Al Gore stop you from seeing this documentary. Gore did NOT produce the science . . . he just gathered the data from the scientists that did and put it into a very well organized and riviting presentation with the hopes of alerting the world to the dangers that we all face.

Science News and Discover magazines have been running articles on this topic. Google "Global Warming" and you will have all the material your little heart could possible hope for. Watch the DVD - - - you can rent it at Blockbuster. It will be worth your time.

You ask this question and get responses from the radical right that make it sound as if global warming were an article of faith. Its a little like asking if a person believes in gravity. The issue of global warming isn't in doubt. Like gravity its an established fact, and like gravity not all of its mechanisms and ramifications are understood.

Warming and cooling periods on earth are well established. What's new is the rate at which we are seeing climate change, a rate that corresponds to increased concentrations of greenhouses gases in the atmosphere.

There are about 7 billion people on the planet and on average each of us dumps about 4 tons of carbon into the atmosphere each year. Do the math 7,000,000,000 times 4 is a big number. It is unrealistic and naive to image that we can continue to dump like this indefinitely without there being a consequence.

So believing that its happening or not isn't going to influence the outcome.

You will see arguments that "there can't be global warming if there is snow in my driveway."

Snow in the driveway is weather, not climate.

You will see arguments that the temperature on Mars has risen, therefore mankind has nothing to do with climate change. Martian climate change is a well established seasonal condition, and this year is no exception.

The only exception to nominal climate variation is here on earth.

Denying the fact of global warming is a little like pulling the blankets over ones head and hoping the issue will go away.

The US Supreme court hears cases on this issue.
The US EPA expresses grave concern over the issue.

Do you think these very right wing organizations have been duped by Gore?

You give Al to much credit.

It's a scientific issue, so the best info will come from scientists. Preferably, ones who are good at communicating with the general public. Two good places to start are:

1) The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)
This panel of scientists is widely recognized as the primary authority on climate change. There are a lot of documents on their website, but the first one you read should be the recently issued Fourth Assessment Report Summary for Policy Makers.

2) realclimate.org is a good resource if you want to research a specific claim about global warming that you may have heard in the general (non-scientific) media. This website is frequently updated by the dozen or so scientists who write the articles.

The whole "Global Warming" thing isn't entirely true. How can Mt. Everest be growing 1/8 of an inch each year if the earth continues to get warmer? The polar ice caps aren't all melting; there are glaciers that continue to grow! Those are just a few of the examples in the side against global warming. Also, the media is biased when it comes to politics and the environment so check out all there is to see and read. Remember that there are two sides to every story, so don't just believe whatever you hear. Also, Valley R's comment is fact so Google that and find out the info about Al Gore's effort on keeping his personal greenhouse emissions down. He's not doing a very good job =]

Hi!

I am convinced that our stupidity as a species, our greed and our delusion IS having a profound effect....

Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth" is as good as any place to start...

I've posted a few answers along these lines in the past - here's a list of things / actions which I've taken myself which are pretty easy...I offer them humbly....

1. Eat organic / locally grown foods...stops the production of more harmful chemicals, cuts down on transport costs and it's better for you as well! Also, make sure that the eggs you buy aren't from a battery farm!

2.Try going vegetarian as well...cows and cow farming is a big environmental / ethical nasty. I read a report recently that suggests that cows farting accounts for 3 times the amount of emmissions that cars do!!!

3. Buy ethical and fair trade goods. This helps increase the poorer nations citizen's basic wealth which in turn helps them to afford to achieve these kinds of changes as well!

4. Try to break your addiction to your motor car. These beasts are one of the worst things for the environment that we've ever had the misfortune to deal with!!! Try using public transport or ride places you'd normally drive to.

5. Use low energy light bulbs in your home. Consider buying high efficiency appliances (fridges etc.). Use gas to cook toast and heat water - toasters and kettles are huge consumers of power!

6. When it gets cold, put another jumper / sweater and thermal leggings on instead of switching on your heater.

7. Turn your television off at the wall at night, rather than leaving it on standby. This simple procedure can stop about 40kg. of CO2 getting into the atmosphere every year.

8. Consider buying "green" power from your energy supplier. It's not really "green" per se, but the premium you pay is used to subsidise people who are building sustainable homes and installing solar or wind generation equipment. The power so created is fed back into the main grid.

9. Go see your local politicians and question them about what they're doing in parliament to affect change. Tell them that you're worried and that their answers will shape how you vote in the next election. It's a long shot, but if you live in a country with a parliamentary system, it can be a grand way to get change happening. Look at the Green Party and the amount of effect they've had across the globe since their inception in the mid-eighties. It might not appear much, but at least we do have a choice these days! "Never underestimate the power of the individual".

10. Finally, do an "Ecological Footprint" Test...it will show you how much you consume, based on your own lifestyle and residence...it's pretty scary, but very worthwhile.

Hope this helps!

Love and Light,

Jarrah

BEING AN ENVIRONMENTALIST I DO NOT BELIEVE IN GLOBAL WARMING.

The Global Warming is a master mind of a few groups based on some localized facts and rest of us are blindly accepting this for all over world.

The increase in temperature with time is a natural process and this should not be understand with respected to the localized incidents, think globally and study the global climatic change and then you will understand that the warming is insignificant.

be care full while reading and understand the facts and don't get confused.

The honest truth is that it is primarily democrats and liberals (at least in America) who believe in it. It is very much like a religion to them. Humans are percieved as bad and destructive and therefore it is easy for them to feel guilt ridden. It is not science, it is mythology. I know that will anger them in the same way it would anger a religious person if you said there was no god. Human caused global warming is a fantasy. It is the thought of a knat trying to be more important than it is. The knat might wish that it can affect the world but in fact the knat has no idea just how small and insignificant he is. I admit that I too am a knat and cannot control the earth's climate, but at least I am a Knat that knows its limitations.
