Sometimes when there are fights police arrest both parties and it's up to the judge to figure out what went wrong and why. They need to get both sides of the story. Obviously if you were really doing it in defense of a woman, and didn't take it to far past that then you will be able to prove it in court. If however you went past defending and protecting and started taking it out on the guy then you could find yourself in trouble as well.
About 4 years ago my husband and I were in a bar and a drunk hit me after I accidentally touched his shoulder. He said to me before he hit me. You touched me. I said I'm sorry I reached to put my arm around my husband I didn't mean to bump your shoulder. He didn't say anything back he just wham cracked me right in the jaw. My husband hit him back and then immediately restrained him from behind. They were rolling on the floor, but my husband had a big hold on him until security got there. Had my husband beat him up for hitting me other than the intial defense hit he would have been responsible for his actions as well. The law is meant to protect those who would use the excuse to beat the daylights out of someone in self defense. But in some ways it's just not right.
I applaud you for defending the woman, I hope that any charges will be dropped.

You did the right thing. You are not old fashioned and being chauvinistic means that you would be supporting what the man was doing. But since you felt that he was wrong, you are definitely not chauvinistic.
Sometimes I don't understand how the law works but there is nothing wrong with you. If anything is wrong it's the law.

There's a difference between what is morally right and what is legally right. What you did may have been morally right, but it was legally wrong. Unless you are in the act of protecting someone (he's coming at her and you stop him with physical force), beating someone up after the fact is still considered legally wrong.

No theres nothing wrong with your thinking. But you also have to protect yourself.
Sounds like this girl wasn't willing to press charges against the guy.
There should be a good samaratin law about this kind of thing.

Same thing happened to my grand dad once.
He got arrested for helping this lady who got beat up by her boyfriend. Then she went back to the guy who beat her up.
My grand daddy said he will never help another woman again.

You are quite a man-----a hero---don't change----the world would be a better place if there were just a handful like you in every city.
