Atlanta is a great place to live. I don't know about Detroit but their weather could be better. It depends where most of your friends and family live. You might miss them to much.
Good luck in your decision.

As a former resident of the Metropolitan Detroit and a current resident of Metropolitan Atlanta, I have five reasons why you should move from Detroit to Atlanta;
1. Atlanta has a stronger and better economy that Detroit. The economy is growing and you it is not centered on one main industry like Detroit that is focused on the automotive industry.
2. Atlanta is much safer than Detroit. The police department in Detroit is not effective and efficient and do not come to your rescue right away. In Atlanta, police are concerned about the citizens and although Atlanta has it dangerous spots, it is not on the top ten most dangerous cities in the United States while Detroit is in the top five most dangerous cities in the United States.
3. In Atlanta, the city shows great compassion and care to its residents. The listen to the residents and if there is a concern or complaints, the city takes care of the situation so that Atlanta does not have a bad reputation. Detroit government is very corrupt and is filled with leaders who do not care about the citizens’ complaints and concerns and the only time the city takes action is when the news media bring the problems to the cities attention.
4. Atlanta has much better public transportation. Atlanta has a system know as MARTA and it consist of buses and a light rail train. The public transportation in Detroit is very unreliable and inefficient and does not run on time while in Atlanta, the transportation run on schedule.
5. Atlanta is a WORLD CLASS CITY. Atlanta was the host of the 1996 Summer Olympic Games and was the host of Super Bowls XXVIII (1994) and XXXIV (2000), the 2007 NCAA Final Four, and is home of the Largest Aquarium in the world known as the Georgia Aquarium. Atlanta is home of cultural centers, shopping malls, CNN, world class museums, the Underground, and is a place where you meet people from all over the world and throughout the United States of America. Also, Atlanta is a tourist destination from people all over the country. Detroit on the other hand is not a world class city anymore. Despite the fact it has hosted Super Bowl XL and is the host of the 2009 NCAA Final Four, Detroit is not a well known tourist destination and is loosing population everyday while Atlanta is gaining population everyday.
I have some websites listed in the source section that could be assistance for you.

How ironic, my wife and I are also moving to Atlanta from Detroit, maybe we should split a moving truck :-)
We're moving because of the same reason the poster with the 5 reasons stated. The economy here sucks and it's booming in Atlanta. My wife is a teacher (can't find a job here worth a damn) and I work in logistics. I have a good job here, but won't have any problems finding a job there with the way their economy is going...
