April 16th will be the 1-year since I lost my grandmother and your question brings ideas I had never pondered.
I base my "bet" on God and I believe he controls life and death. Science cannot explain how we are truly come to be or end. It is only the miracle of God as to how we are formed in the womb and how we pass on to death.

I'm sorry for your loss. My dear, death is what gives life its joy. Nothing is precious without the possibility of loss. We are sad because we loved. Tomorrow, I may lose my husband, my children, or they may lose me, that's what makes nighttime kisses so sweet and so special. It would be great if science could end disease but I wouldn't want it to end all suffering and death. Haven't you ever had a headache go away in the middle of the workday after you had some caffeine or Tylenol? The rest of that day was so awesome. To lose someone is hard, I have lost many loved ones, but think back to what you miss and what you regret. You miss the times you were together, and regret any time you took her for granted and decided to stay home to catch the new South Park (or some other show). That regret makes the time you have with those still living so much more precious.

science isn't the key to anything. each year new theories are aired and old ones are discarded. Very few scientists agree with each other on any one thing. eachhas their theories and the most popular one of the year is declared the " truth" The bible however, contains truth that has been around for thousands of yearsand is tried and tested by time.. and by the way. belief in Christ will conquer death, many people have been raised from the dead since Christ walked the earth.

Science cannot conquer death just like science cannot create life(Cloning is not, nurturing a egg into a human being in a test tube is not creating life for in Cloning the life God created is being copied from God-made Dna and in the test tube its the egg that has already the life and Dna created by God.) We all die once because of the sin of disobedience of Adam and Eve but live again forever because God born as Jesus Christ died on the cross to open Heaven for mankind. Am sorry that you no longer have your Grandmother here with you but you do know that she up there in Heaven is free from illness, pain and is young again happy forever kept safe in the light/the love of God and there she waits ,she'll be there to ease the way when its your turn to go Home. A personality is all we are-the sum of all our feelings, beliefs, experiences, hopes, dreams which begins when we are born and grows and forms every day of our lives and it can't be captured and wouldn't really want to for you'd rob then the person of their essence-were you to be able to take from a person whats left would be a shell that would simply die .Since the soul is also that which holds the personality were one to capture it somehow it would be a most grievious sin for that soul would be trapped yearning desperately for the freedom to go home-Heaven.I too have dear ones that at times I miss terribly but am comforted for know they are bathed in the love-the light of God and the day will come when I too will be there with them-happy in Heaven.

Death is the natural balance to life. Everything that lives, also dies.
Science has no interest in keeping people from dying, only prolonging one's natural life. Think of the ramifications of people not dying...overpopulation, the effects of aging on the body and mind...it's a bad idea.

Because science is not perfect. That's the whole point. If we knew everything already, there would be no need for science at all. As it stands, we don't know everything, so we just have to keep learning more. That's what science is all about.
Sorry about your grandmother.

I'm sorry about your grandmother. Two dear friends have died over the past ten days. Though it's sad, death is the natural end to life. If we conquered death, we'd have to stop people from reproducing, or more people would starve or die of mass disease. I prefer natural, normal death to either of those options!

Science had improved living and longevity lately, in terms of advancement in health and medicine especially in areas of avoidable deaths. Don't forget however, that science introduced death in the fast lanes: autocrash, in the air: aircrash and most dastardly of them all: guns and bombs with which Binlady would have annihiliated the entire 'us' if he had succeeded.Brethren!, comfort yourseves with this: whether you are rich or poor, literate or not, one day, it will be time to go and that trip in itself is not an exit but a transition to another realm of living.

Death is inherent in all living organisms. It's a condition of living.
But science has given us many advances in medicine that have vastly improved the quality of living (and dying), so you'll pardon me if I continue to hold out hope that it's our best bet, based on past performance.

Science is not trying to answer such quesitons.
As a scientist, we observe as best as we can the world god has created. As a christian, it is not my place to tell god how to create. The debate over modern science and religion has little to do with 'basing your bets.' These are matters of faith.
