I have a Ragdoll cat with very long fur. He is aging as well. He occasionally gets fur clumps, which I simply brush out or cut out. Recently, he developed a huge matt on his neck/chest area. I carefully cut it out. Today I come home, and I notice a HUGE bald spot on him! It is in the area where the clumps were. The skin still has some hair on it, but it is very fine and thin (his hair is generally fine anyhow). The skin is also very pink, but I don't know if this is normal color or not as I have not seen his skin before. Does anyone know what this could be?

he probably was licking the area!! sometimes there skin can look very pink, or he could have been pulling at the hair around the area..i would just keep an eye on it, and call your vet if it gets any worse!

It's irritated and raw as he more than likely licked at it - but it is normal. Brush your cat more often - as in everyday and night or take him to a groomers and have him shaved down a bit. If you're unable to keep him from matting up so often - then the groomers will make it easier on the both of you.

He's just been licking it. The skin has been pulled and irritated because of the mat, that you just removed. He'll stop in the next day or so.
