Wait until March 27, 2007 to get the latest version, Photoshop CS3. There are two versions being released, so check out www.photoshop.com (redirects to Photoshop Product page on the Adobe website) for more details on which of the two versions of CS3 is right for you.

CS3 has a much faster startup time over CS2 and many new added features make it a great improvement over CS2. More system resources are bound to be used, but not enough to overwhelm a decent computer. I have the current beta of CS3 and I am planning on upgrading once it comes out.

I have Portable Adobe Photoshop on my flash drive, which allows me to use it whenever I can plug into a computer. I think this is the best, because I often work away from my computer. Since I personally own it, it requires no business license and I can use it at work and write it off as a business expense.

Adobe Photoshop CS2, elements is pretty nifty, too, though.

I prefer Adobe Illustrator CS2, though. :) Thats just me.

i'm using CS2 now, so i think its CS2,, but CS3 is on its way to the market,, i'm sure it would be greater than CS2, but i'm also sure that it requires a greater system requirements. so stick to the CS2 as for now.
