Does a gas powered semi auto or automatic shotgun need removable gas cartridges that need to be replaced?

As Wess said, gas operated means that some of the gas created by the burning gun powder exits a small hole in the barrel near the receiver. That gas will travel back and force a piston back that is connected to the bolt. The bolt gets pushed back and ejects the spent round. Then the action springs push the bolt back forward which chambers a new round.

The word "gas" means that it uses the gas created from the powder. No CO2 necessary.

No. Some of the rapidly expanding gas created by the burning of the powder charge in the cartridge is routed back through a tube to help power the action and load the weapon for the next shot.

I thought the same thing when I was a little kid.... Funny, haven't thought of that in MANY years!

The above answer is dead on. Basically, you're using some of the expended gas from a fired cartridge to cycle the action.

First round is manually put into battery by operating the bolt, its all "automatic" from there. After the last round, you must go back to manually racking a round.
