Dr. John Gray is a clinical psychologist who has practiced as a marriage counselor for over 20 years. We can conclude from this that he knows something about relationships between men and women. The caveat is that much of what he writes in his books is based on his own practice -- this is not what statisticians would call a "statistically significant sample." Even so, enough people find that this anecdotal evidence matches their own experience that his theories appear to have some validity. The field could certainly use some more scientifically rigorous work, but until then guys like Dr. Gray are the best we've got (shame they don't agree more often).

Popular psychology/sociology books are generally based on the author's intuition rather than rigorous scientific research. This is mainly because rigorous research in areas like dating compatibility typically yield ambiguous results, revealing more about the sorts of questions that were asked than any sort of answers. And since nobody expects his self-help book to be used as the basis for some Universal Code Of Planetary Conduct, he just sits down and has fun making stuff up and writing about it. I do the same thing in the articles I write about How to Keep Your Spouse Happy for the newspaper. It's fun.

well that book likes to re-affirm popular sterotypes about men and women...if men are from mars and women are from venus how can we be equal? Instead of looking at how men and women are socialized differently to act like people from different planets...anyways researchers tend to find what they are looking for, it is an inherit bias in research, if you look back to the turn of the 19thC most research stated that there were differences in brain sizes and intelligent capacities between races, which since science has shown to be false...moral of my story is you can not believe everything you read

IT'S A BOOK. ANYBODY CAN WRITE A BOOK.

On the other hand, you gotta figure the author did their research. That's how you usually write an entire book. You research.
