Track is an individual sport. Your toughest competitor is yourself. From week to week you need to beat yourself. If you keep practicing hard and improving, sooner or later you will find yourself at the front of the pack.

My suggestion on improving is to learn different strategies for running the mile. Don't take the lead at the beginning of the race and draft off those who are in front of you. Don't pass on the curves and wait for the straight away. But, in the end, you need to find your strategy to run the mile.

When in practice work on your form and mechanics. Don't just run miles or longer to practice you need to do 200m and 400m to develop your speed and kick.

Track is surprisingly a very mental sport. You need to remember to think positive. Focus on your PR's (personal records). That will keep your attitude at a place where you can improve and not tear yourself down.

Work on your stride; the length of your step. Some people are just fast. Personally I am a slow walker and, well, I do not even run anymore at all.

Do you give yourself fast boosts when you are nearing the end? You need to surge past some of the people as you get close to the end. You know "Slow and steady wins the race..." Are you starting off too fast and then dying out? Can you start slow and steady and then surge fast?

Finally... 3rd to last is a lot better than last. Can you imagine being the last one all the time!?
