I have two friends. One has a dog that bit him because it was sick(not contagious or anything, just something like the flu) It was a bad bite, but he wouldn't go to the ER, 'cos he thought they would report it to the police and kill his dog. Another friend's dog accidently bit him trying to bite his other dog. Again, no ER because of the police. Do they automatically kill your dog for this? Does the ER automatically call the cops?

No...all dog bites should be reported. But I've been bitten by one of my dogs and I just explained the situation to the ER staff

No...they will not kill dogs for biting people

I would however tell your friend to go to the ER right away.

Dogs carry a lot of bateria in their mouth and he needs anti biotics.

I can assure you that even if the ER reported the bite to animal control the most they would do is ask for proof of rabies and possibly have you quarantine the dog at your vet or even at home if the dog is sick...but I doubt that will happen

Make him go to the ER please...

I know how much dog bites hurt. Infections can make it worse

:(

Reporting A Dog Bite

I once had an elderly lady for a friend. She had a wonderful little dog. A mix of some sort. She had the dog trained well and it behaved very well. Learn here https://tr.im/ompaT

She kept an uncovered candy dish on her coffee table with candy in it. The dog was forbidden to eat the candy. When she was in the room observing the dog he did not even appear to notice the candy. One day while she was in her dinning room she happened to look in a mirror and could see her dog in the living room. He did not know he was being watched. For several minutes he was sitting in front of the candy bowl staring at the candy. Finally he reached in and took one. He placed it on the table and stared at it, he woofed at it. He stared some more, licked his chops and PUT IT BACK in the bowl and walked away. Did he want the candy, oh yeah. Did he eat it? Nope. They can be trained that well but most, I'll admit, are not trained that well. When I was a young boy, maybe 5 years old. We had a german shepherd. He was very well trained also. My mom could leave food unattended on the table, no problem. She would open the oven door and set a pan roast beef or roast chicken on the door to cool. No problem. He would not touch it, watched or not. But butter? Whole other story. You leave a stick of butter anywhere he could reach and it was gone. He was a large shepherd so there were not many places he could not reach. Really, I think the number of dogs trained to the point they will leave food alone when not being supervised is very small indeed.
.
Now if we are talking obedience training, not food grubbing, that is a different story. Way back when I was first learning obedience training one of the final exercises was to put our dogs in a down/stay and not only leave the room but leave the building for 15 minutes. The only person that stayed was our trainer, not the owners. Most of the dogs in my class did not break their stay, which would be an automatic fail. I'm happy to report my dog was one of the ones that passed.

I think if it is your dog and you can provide proof of vaccination, nothing would be done. BUT I AM NOT SURE. Also, things of this nature tend to vary from state to state and sometimes even county to county. As far as the friend that got bit due to one dog trying to bite his other dog, I would suggest Basic Obedience Class for both dogs. They need to know that HE is the alpha and when he says to knock it off when they are aggressive to each other, they stop. I do not mean to be preachy, I would just hate to see his dogs possibly become aggressive and get put down because they had never been taught better. This is probably BAD advice and will do nothing to solve the problem of someone's own dog biting them but if it happens again, just have them say he has no idea what kind of dog/what color/size bit him, it happened so fast he could not tell..Honestly, it is in the past that a bite occured. I would be trying to get some training/leadership going on to make sure it does not happen again. I have a 90LB Rottie that got neutered and was in pain and we had to check his private area to make sure he had not licked his wound raw. He was a rescue dog that we have had only had a month, and he did not bite us. We have established ourselves as the "alphas" (pack leaders). Not saying he will NEVER bite us (I wouldnt say that about any dog) but it is MUCH less likely when you have taken the initiave to show them you are the boss (in a humane, non violent, positive way) Once again, NO OFFENSE and I do not mean to preach. Hope your friends are ok and I think that is cool that they both love their dogs enough to not want anything to happen to them. It sounds like they are really sweet and I would just hate for them to have to lose their dog or dogs due to aggressive issues with the dogs. GOOD LUCK

it is the law that all animal bites that come to the ER be reported to the local heath department, the health dept will come out and check the dog and determine if it is violent, and the dog must be quarantined for 10 days to rule out rabies, even if it has been vaccinated( no vaccination is 100%) the police comes out only when a complaint is made by the person that is bitten, at least thats the way thats its done where i live. your friend needs to be put on some antibiotics, because dog bites are very dangurous due to infections

The owner of the dog needs to know how to "operate" the dog, same way you can get into a car that's in perfect running order but if you don't know how to drive you won't have much luck making the car go anywhere. If the owner doesn't know how to maintain the training, the dog will soon become untrained again. Read more here https://tinyurl.im/EoIsH

People seem to think that once a dog is trained, that's it. Not true. You must reinforce the dog's training every single day in some way. It's best if the owner and the dog go together to get trained. As a professional trainer once said to me "We can train any dog in 2 days. It takes longer to train the owners

I do not know the rules for each state, however, my dog bit my husband who required medical attention and the bite had to be reported. A coworker was bitten by a dog she was grooming and required medical attention, dog bite was required to be reported. My husband was bitten at work (Vet Tech), and required medical attention, that bite was required to be reported. In New York State all dogs are required by law to be quarantined for 10 days and proof of Rabies must be provided to the County Health Department.

No. Not unless he wants to report his own dog. I believe its only if your dog bites another person...
But, I think that dog would get a talkin too about biting the hand that feeds him!

its not the cops that are concern its the RABIES vet. Depends on where you live really (if you have rabies or like in England they dont have it)
ANyhow - no they dont kill the dogs, in fact they cannot, the dogs MUST remain on a 10 day rabies hold if they are not vaccinated.

IF a dog bits a stranger that person can fight for the dog to be put down after the rabies hold, but if the dog bites its owner or a person who doesnt try to get the dog put down the police are too busy to care about stuff like that, its not their job.

Absolutely all dog (or any animal, for that matter) bites, regardless if it is your own or not, have to be reported. And no, they will not kill the dog. They'll come out to your house or over to the ER and get some information. Unless it's sketchy, everything usually wraps up just fine.
