The Essene's were gnostic in beliefs. Unfortunately, the church desired control and tried to discredit any beliefs that did not center around fear.

Not sure, but they most likely brought the Apocalyptic view of the future to Christianity. This "The end is coming soon" teaching has certainly driven fear into the hearts of followers. It has also brought many a false prophet to rise and confuse the devout.

No, they really didn't have any serious impact on Christianity, because they kept ot themselves. They did have some effect in helping to preserve Old Testament Scriptures, however.
