I have been one of Jehovah's Witnesses for 12 years, and I can say for a fact that nowhere in the Bible does it say that we are allowed to lie. Lying is a sin and is repeatedly condemned in the Bible. If those brothers and sisters did knowingly lie, no matter what the reason, they were acting contrary to Bible principles and it did NOT go unnoticed by Jehovah.
I hope this answer helps. :)
Departed: I promise there are no secret handshakes, even for those with the heavenly hope. As for me, I hope to live here on Earth forever in paradise.
David: Since a cult is defined as a group of people who follow an individual, and Jehovah's Witnesses recognize no human as their leader, only God and Jesus, we would therefore certainly not fit that description. Do you think it's possible that, since we are on the most part very serious and dedicated to doing God's will above all else, we have been mis-labeled as "fanatics" and a "cult"? I promise you that any Witness who wishes to disassociate himself from the organization is free to do so.

No we do not. The story you tell, are you 100% sure it is true?I mean sure, your husband was told about this, but how do you know for sure that this story he was told is really the truth? Can you be 100% totally positive that what you are stating here is absolutely true? If not, then what are you doing, are you not the spreading false gossip like some of your answerer's answering with their own beliefs or ideas they heard from others who don't know facts so are be lying even unwitting lies are lies.Would you like someone to say things like that about you(untruths or even half truths that are twisted to blacken) I gather you would not feel pleased about it no-one could, so don't do it to others either, Is it not possible that this woman would be able to lie, or do u feel that it must be that the JW's were lying? How would you feel if someone called you a liar without basis without facts? But just on some broad statement ?I personally have been a Witnes for over 25 years hasve been studying the Bible for 34 years and know for a fact thatthere is no such justification in the /Jehovah's Witness Bible or any Biible because I was searching both my Bible as well as The New World tTranslation when I was learning to be a Christian Witnes of Jehovah, but of Course Jehovah's Witnesses are human and therefore do err,so if this story you speak of is or was true then these people took it upon themselves to do this not from anything our Bible says that condones lying because there is no such condoning in it,and if they did do that then Jehovah saw this and it is not something that they will get away with, just like anyone else we are answerable for our sins.

Hi. No the bible does not support lying. Do we as Witnesses/Christians/Humans at times slip and sin??? You bet. As to the people who testified, I don't know what to say. Sadly Child Custody hearings are NEVER fun. I know that court cases have one simple rule, someone loses. When this happens it can greatly color their feelings on what happened. It could be that she is in denial, or hurt ,etc. and they did not lie, or they feel they were truthful but the way what they said came out it sounded dishonest or it could be that, sadly, they may have lied. This is all a very good reminder of the importance of remembering to always try to be truthful.
There is also a difference between being truthful and honest/ telling the truth vs telling one's perception of the truth. Someone might Honestly say I feel the Sky is red becuase they truely believe it, doesn't exactly make it true.
Hope this helps

After 7 very intense years of Bible study and comparison of lots of different Bibles, I definitely feel that the New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures which is most popular among Jehovah's Witnesses differs very little from the most popular translations of today except in the fact that it includes a literal translation of the YHWH as Jehovah in accord with Psalm 83:18 in the original King James Version. Also, Jehovah's Witnesses do not approve of lying for any reason as the Bible says that liars will not inherit God's Kingdom and this is the main topic of their preaching and the goal that all have for their own lives. I think, perhaps, your husband misunderstood or maybe the woman, herself, lied in an attempt to save face. I am sorry it has caused a misunderstanding on your part as well. Feel free to ask for an explaination of any of our teachings or even a copy of the New World Translation or Bible study. Any Jehovah's Witness will be happy to help you. Or e-mail me if you prefer.

How do you know they lied. Have you lived in that household? How do you know that she even lost custody? She may have voluntarily gave it up, but to avoid the bashing she gets from other women for making that choice, she claims they were taken from her. I've seen literally hundreds of such cases in the last twenty years of working with divorced and single fathers. I've written many article, including posted the question on here of why do women who give up custody get treated so poorly by society, compared to women who have abortions?
You don't know the whole story, any more than I do. As for poor parenting, that is an interpretive term that is used far too often in our courts. Do you know why they divorced? Did she have an affair? Should a parent who has violated the marriage covenant be awarded custody? What type of example is that to the kids? That still comes under good parenting.
By the way, a father has to prove to me first why he thinks he deserves custody for I will help him. I prefer bird nest custody, where the children remain in one home and each parent lives there for three weeks.

When I used to attend the Hall, and we discussed the persecution many would experience in the future, JW's often gave talks which explained the difference between lies, and VOLUNTEERING to answer questions unless directly asked.
In other words, even if you knew someone was asking a specific question to obtain the answer to something you knew about a witness or the organization, unless they asked specifically, we were told it was using DISCERNMENT and sound judgment not to offer that information willingly.
One of the elders at our hall used to tell examples of how missionaries avoided death by using this type of DISCERNMENT. There were also stories in the Bible they "interpreted" as examples of this.
I can understand the reasoning behind this, and it makes sense, but we all know, that anytime someone asks you a question, if you know what they "really" want to know, but you don't address the issue, that is still deception....lies.
If Elder Joe has been hiding in your basement for two weeks, but you haven't seen him with your eyes at all the day, but hear him downstairs on the phone. If someone visits your home looking for him, and asks "have you seen Joe TODAY we have a warrant for his arrest" and you answer no. Technically you've answered their question, but it is still a lie because you know what they're "really" asking.

As a Jehovah's Witness I can assure you we study and apply
gods word in the Bible faithfully. Of all religions we are slandered the most. Probably because we call all other religions false. As you well know there can't be more than one true religion just like there can't be more than one right answer in a math problem. Jehovah's Witnesses study the Bible more than any other religion on earth. We consider Jesus Christ the head of our Congregation, we have no paid clergy nor do we ask for money. We invite anybody seeking the truth to visit us at our Kingdom Halls and see for themselves.

Jehovah's Witnesses use the standard 66-book bible; there is no 'book of Witness' or 'holy book' used by Witnesses besides the bible. They prefer translations which restore the Divine Name, but Witnesses use dozens of different translations and do not believe that any particular translation is uniquely inspired (over others).
Jehovah's Witnesses certainly do not condone lying.

I have been one of Jehovahs Witnesses for ten years.
I can honestly tell you that lying is not condoned by Jehovahs people.
The Bible tells us that "Satan is the father of the lie".
As Jehovahs Witnesses we do our utmost to bring praise to God's holy name.
I dont quite understand your story. If the lady in question had left Jehovahs organisation then in all likehood she would not be fearful of displeasing Jehovah anymore than she had already by leaving his orgainisation so lying would not be a problem to her.
But Jehovahs Witnesses who strive to live by Jehovahs righteous standards as set out in his holy word try to bring God the honor he is rightly due.
