There are a few good answers already for this question. But somehow your Search has or is corrupted by something it might not mean a virus but very much could be. You could have downloaded something that has compromised the search tool. Thats what I would look for first. I had a similiar one on Windows 2000 pro but it just runs awfully slow and I know for a fact that it needs more RAM. As a matter of fact the hole computer is slow. My search is always slow so I just use windows explorer which is slower yet but at least I can find the program that I want. I'm just thinking you got to many programs running which is taking all your memory and its just slow starting try deleting some of those programs that you don't need then try it again.

Click start >click run >type in msconfig click on the startup tab then uncheck everything there except your anti virus and internet connection . Click ok and your computer will restart . Then see if your computer is freezing.
Do an Online Scan with any of the online scanners lists on the link below and let us know what virus you have on your computer.
