hi, i just got a macbook, and have been trying to install AOL instant messenger for it. i've tried to download the one for mac, but the file is called aim.bin, and opens as an exec file with a bunch of symbols, and doesn't actually install. what does that mean? i've used PCs all my life and am still getting used to everything. any help would be appreciated. thanks!

Hello fateful_gravitation,

You've downloaded a binary file. You've probably downloaded the file from here:

http://www.aim.com/get_aim/mac/latest_macosx.adp

Normally you would simply double-click on a Macintosh Disk Image downloaded file, and it would start mounting up like a disc that was inserted into your Macintosh. I tried to download this myself and it did the same thing as you. You may need to download a demo version of Stuffit, which is an old program that expands compressed files that you can get over the Internet. Try this here.

On the other hand, fateful_gravitation, you already have iChat AV, which uses the AIM server. AIM is actually an inferior product to your iChat AV. You simply set iChat up with your AIM user name and password and your buddies will be listed automatically.

Best of luck to you.

I don't think the latest versions of AIM are available for mac. Instead you can use apple's iChat or a free client like gaim or adium.
