There is a blackbird that always hangs around our garden, and he acts pretty strangely. If I'm ever out there and come across him, he stares at me for ages. He twitches his wings and his head, and if I get any closer he flies off. Is this normal behaviour?

I am assuming that you are in the UK, not the United States since you refer to your garden, rather than yard. The black birds you have are a totally different type bird than the ones in the states.

The behavior you describe sounds normal to me. He is staring to make sure you don't come any closer. The twitching is probably nervousness at your presence. Birds have good reason to be nervous around people! I love the blackbirds in Europe. They have a great song! For those of you in the states reading this, European Blackbirds are closely related to our American Robin. They look a lot like a solid black robin.

Where are you? Are you sure it's a blackbird, or is it a black bird? (Maybe a crow, raven, or starling) The blackbirds I know generally socialize and feed together, you don't habitually find one alone.
Other than this, it makes sense that a bird would watch as you approach, then fly away if you get too close.
