i have a dog who is neutered as a puppy and his scrotum just shrunk and you cant even see it now, and he is ten and very active still
nuetering doesnt change a dog, when done as a puppy the only thing changing yhoru dog is maturity, he will change naturally, and poms stay yippy and hyper thier whole lives
i can tell you this though two un nuetered males will fight and eventually lift thier leg in your home, so one of them better both need to be fixed to avoid it
also you can add years to thier lives by avoiding certain cancers, anal gland problems and getting hit by cars while looking for love

In a few months he will be an adult so wont be his same self anyhow. A lot of people blame spaying or neutering for a dog being less playful, but they forget the dog isnt a puppy any more either.
how can his balls sag if they are removed?
Poms are so furry that after they are neutered you cannot see a "ball sack" anyhow.
The ideal age is 8-10 months but vets often vary on what age they reccommed a dog be done at - they can be neutered as adults unles really old and the vet is concerned about the stress, but your 6 yr old dog is not considered really old
the one thing a neutered dog doesnt have to worry about is Testicular Cancer- a VERY good reason for neutering
the ONLY reason not to neuter is if the dog is going to be shown (no dog should be bred unless it has been shown and proven to be worthy of breeding)

Ok, first, when they neuter him, he won't have balls anymore so they won't sag! My mom had 2 Poms and got both neutered - one at about 2 yrs (we found him as an abandoned dog) and the other at 6 mos, which is typically the age the recommend for spaying/neutering. Vets say the younger the better recovert time is shorter - but NO younger than 6 mos. I never notice a decreased activity in either of them...Poms are typically very energetic breeds anyway! If you don't plan to breed them, have them neutered - it prevents humping & spraying - two bad behaviors that dogs sometimes do when not "fixed."
And don't worry...he WILL be fine!

The ideal age to neuter a pet is 6 months old but you can spay or neuter at almost any age. 9 months is a perfect age to neuter him. His personality will not change at all. Neutering him will eliminate almost all chances of him spraying to mark his territory and humping things to show dominance. Your dog won;t get lazy, fat, destructive or lose any of his playfulness due to neutering. Neutering your dog will also prevent enlarged prostate (which occurs in over 60% of older dogs), prostate tumors and infections; and perineal hernias and tumors. That is why it would be best to neuter BOTH your dogs. 6 years isn't too late to neuter him.
I have no idea who told you that his balls will sag or look like "skinless balls hanging". Neutering the dog is simply the REMOVAL of both testicles.

If you're not going breed him..cut em off honey.
It will decrease the likelyhood to have behavoral problems like marking, running away, aggression
6 years is not too old to neuter him
Neutering should be done about 6-7 months before their hormones build up too much and start with behavioral problems.
Balls will not sag..there will be no balls.

I gotta tell ya after he is neuter he will be the same dog just not as distracted. As far as a saggy scrotum they won't be there anymore. Nothing left to sag. These are questions to ask the Vet. I have never owned a dog male or female that was not spayed or neutered. It's not fair to a dog that you are not going to breed to not spay or neuter them.

Get both your boys neutered best time is from 6 months of age ... Poms that have been neutered have a bigger coat but be sure not to over feed as they will not need as much food .Personality will remain the same, sometimes if you neuter a male before he learns to lift his leg to urinate he never will lift his leg.

I am a also a Pom owner and my 2 males are nuetered. If you dont plan on breeding them its a good idea, it keeps health issues to a minimum. It will also help him from marking his territory (your house). Poms are a very active and fun breed so it shouldnt slow him down much at all.
