I'm not necessarily looking to become a hockey player or a figure skater. I just want to learn how to skate well enough so I can play the occasional hockey game on the ice with my friends, or just go for the occasional leisure skate.

How long do you think it would take to learn some basic skating skills?

It really all depends on you. If you have rollerblading experience then a few (4-5) 1 hour directed sessions to learn stuff like stopping and crossovers. If you've never skated before or have poor balance or co-ordination then it could take you twice as long - maybe 8 -10 1 hour sessions.

While I wouldn't say skating on the ice is quite the same as riding a bike, especially when your skating in a game setting, I don't think that its going to be as difficult as you might think to get into it and not only that but get fairly good. My advice if your looking to get out there and play as soon as possible is get on the ice and skate as much as possible, the more you do it the more comfortable you will become with it and you can go from there. You will hit a point where your forwards and backwards skating will become second nature and when you get to that point start skating with a stick and pair of gloves. Other than that just mind your edges because thats a lot of what skating is all about. Good luck and have fun!

A few times of skating or a few hours people can usually pick up the skills that they need to skate leisurely. It can take a few days to fully pick up the skills, but it shouldn't take you to long to be able to be basically able to skate well. The more often you skate the better you will come.

to learn the basics and get confidence, I would say about a week, remember though hockey skates and ice skates are different. I would suggest maybe checking at your local rink to see if they have lessons, most usually do, some are free, some you have to pay for and tell them what you want to do.

Hardest part is learning to skate backwards...but that too will become easier as you practice it.

Good luck!

not long, depends on your balance.
Let just say, 3 or 4 hours.

but then you want to learn to stop.
that might take an hour

and for hockey. maybe a few crossovers.
so you can turn and sharp angles...(go faster)

A few hours or a day or two

It really shouldn't take long at all. Depending on how good your balance is, it shouldn't take more than a couple of hours.
