I would book at least 21 days advance. Find the cheapest fare possible currently, then sign up for fare alerts, at Orbitz or SmarterTravel, to be sent to your email when the fare goes on sale. Right now, there are 4 airlines right around $350 for this trip (CHS-MSP, AirTran, USAir, Continental, and Northwest), but only Northwest is nonstop. Since you asked for "best", I'd choose the nonstop Northwest flight which is a few dollars cheaper than the rest, but sign up for those fare alerts because I think $350 is on the high side of what you can probably get this for. $200-$250 would be a "buy" in my opinion.

Check with Clark Howard. He does travel deals on the Friday flyer Radio show. Summer is a busy time of travel and the most crowded. Delta has a good safety record! AIrtran and Southwest have good airfares and usually have fare wars with Delta , United, and American. Alot of airlines offer summer specials. Be sure you understand all the rules of your ticket no matter which airline you choose.

Book soon, but try not to book on a holiday as fares generally rise if you fly on one. Fly in the middle of the week (Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday) as they are cheapest.

Generally, the quicker you book, especially for June holiday season, it will be cheaper. However, you can also try to book last minute, as most flights will offer cheap cheap seats just to try and fill the flight.

Go to Travelocity and put in the info. Then you can pick the cheapest flight, or the best times. It isn't hard.
