I drove cross country with my dog for a long-term work assignment and will be heading home in a few weeks. He's a 3 year old labrador retriever. Is it safe to fly him back with me on a connecting flight on United or Delta or is it best for me to drive the 3000 miles to get home to Seattle, Washington from Jacksonville, Florida? My vet said giving him sedatives to fly are a bad idea. I'd like to get him home in April or May.

I fly with dogs of varying ages and have done so at least twice a month for years have not had a problem I live in Australia and have flown dogs from England to hear and sent dogs to the US no sedatives needed I think they sleep all the way.A few hours on a plane is better than a lot of hours in a car.
Cheers

Hello. I think it's great that you treat your friend like a friend. My dogs have done many o' miles flying. Yes, it's always nerve racking... a few tips. Try to remind the pilot that there is a dog under the cabin. They don't take it personally, I promise. Also, my dogs have transportation narcolepsy(sp), without help, but you can help calm them with benedryl or herbal meds... no sedatives. If your dog travels well by car, let him know that his crate is a very secure place. He will be happy to see you on the other end. Best of luck, happy traveling!
PS. Don't forget the health cert.

Trust your vet, they know what's good for you pet.It should take only 25 days or sooner to get home by the sounds of the miles...It depends on how fast you go.And take a map with you at all times. You can get lost easily.
