This sounds to me more like a meal of opportunity, too - the dottyback was probably already dead and the shrimp just looked at it as an easy meal.

How large is your tank? If your clown was small when you got him, he may be getting more territorial as he grows. The bad news is, without the dottyback, the tank is now "his" and he will be aggressive toward any new fish that is introduced.

If you could provide more info on your tank size and the water chemistry, I might be able to give you a better idea of what might have happened.

Hm... Doesn't sound like something a Banded Coral Shrimp would do, if the fish didn't appear to have any external pincer damage it may have been the clownfish. My clownfish is very "horsey" and constantly bugs the other fish, so you may have an overly aggressive individual. Also, I don't think a banded shrimp would be quick enough to grab a dottyback that was in good health. I'm gonna guess it was the clownfish, but I couldn't tell you for sure.

yes your Banded shrimp will eat your Royal Dotty backs, however i don't see them hunting them their scavengers

say now your corals are closing up and the clown is acting weird? we need more info here are some specific questions that will help.

i think you need to broaden you chemical testing . what do you test for?

you treat with copper?

salinity?

filtration?
What kind, last time you adjusted it before they died?
list of corals, anemone any live creature even if you think it's not the reason
what was the last coral, or anemone you added ?

Well, your banded shrimp is a carnivore, however I can't see how your dotty back fit into it's mouth. Big size difference. There is nothing that you did wrong. All you can do to make sure that it doesn't happen again is to separate them.
