My friend is having a baby, and wants me to be the godmother. I am so excited to be the godmother. She also wanted me to be the one to get custody of the baby if anything was to happen to her. What exactly do we need to get that done? I know a godmother isn't a legal position, but how can we make that possibly that I would get custody?

The dad is not in the picture-he is a loser
The grandmother I don't think would fight it, but I am not sure....can she fight it if it is in the will?
She is only 20 and has no support, so I am trying to get the answers to some of these type of questions, because I love her and cannot wait for the baby to be here!

your firend would have to have a legal Will drawn up and signed stating you are the appointed gaurdien for her child if anythign shoudl happen to her.

as far as being a God mother goes (congrats) and depending on the church...it IS a written document :)

You should consult a lawyer that specializes in family law. There would be a process that would need to happen, and what could be done would depend on others who may be able to stake a claim to the child - biological father, grandparents, etc. A lawyer would be able to tell you what could be done to appoint you legal guardian of the child, if something were to happen to the mother. Congratulations! Being a godmother is a wonderful thing!

Oh wow, I'm 20 years old also and I have two children! I just found the perfect godmother, my best friend for my children, you have to go to the county courthouse and ask the director which wing or office you have to go to for legal godmother papers. I know my children would be in great hands. Just go down to the courthouse.

Congratulations !!!
Your friend would have to make up a will. She would have to put that she wants you to be legal guardian. But if the father of the child is involved he could take you to court for custody. Good luck

Being a Godmother says you will raise the child in the "Faith" of the parents should they pass away.

In the catholic religion, god parents are supposed to raise the god child if something happens to its parents. Usually what that means is to bring up the child according to the teachings of the church and with morals and values. Very very rarely the god parents end up raising the child. Like you said, it is not a legal position, but be happy yur friend trusts you that much with her child.

They would need to get a living will done, but that would not be your only responsibility. Don't forget that it will be your job to make sure that the child stays on track with religion, you are to make sure that child keeps her faith (if anything was to happen to the parents). You are basically, their spiritual advisor. You are to lead them and encourage them spiritually, even when the parents are around. Congrats and many blessing for your future.

The mother would have to talk to an attorney and get a legal will written up that said you would be the legal guardian if anything happened to her!!!

Your friend needs to speak to an attorney and make a living will, in which custody of her child would go to you.
