What does this mean?

I've recently increased my interstate driving time exponentially.. and at night I notice when a semi is passed by a semi, it sometimes flashes its lights at the other semi.

Sometimes they do it to non-semi's too.. it was done to me one time.

Everybody is correct when the semi's are passing each other going in the same direction. Keep in mind, if semi's or car's are heading in the opposite direction and they're flashing their lights, slow down. In a lot of cases, its a warning a cop is running radar a mile or 2 down the road.

It is used for a couple of reasons--One to tell the passing driver that their trailer has passed the front of the truck being passed, and it is now safe to move back over. Second it is used to notify oncoming traffic that a police officer/or speed trap is set up just down the road.

When another truck is passed by another, the passed truck will flash the lights to indicate that it is safe for the passing truck to return to the same lame. It is a act of courtesy and safety.

The skilled driver already knows when it's safe to move over a lane, he doesn't need to be told, so it's just another little thing they do to try and stay awake, along with chatting on their radios, looking down into the cars with female drivers, and so on
