What is appropriate Gift?

A friend of mines father went into the hopstial for surgery the other day, and i want to get her a gift im not sure what to get tho. I was thinking a teddy bear maybe. Also how should i present it, just like hand it to her or what and do i need to get a card or something to go with it. Ideas please we are casual friends ive known her for a few months
